Ovi just announced that his dad passed.

Not surprising considering the news, but still awful to lose someone.

RIP. In Ovi’s Instagram tribute he posted a few pics of his dad holding the Stanley Cup. I’m glad he and his pops got to enjoy that accomplishment.

RIP. My thoughts go out to Ovi and his family.

And if anybody’s coming here to be disrespectful, just leave. Not the time or place.

  9. Condolences out to the family. Never something easy to deal with

Crazy. I literally saw him walking the concourse a few months ago at the last game I went to.

So very sad; papa OVI was a fixture at Caps games…. RIP

Oh man…feel horrible for him and his family. I kinda expected the worst based off the urgency of his departure.

I lost my dad 8 years ago, my step-dad 5 years ago. It never gets easier.

    RIP dad of the GOAT.

My grandfather talked to Ovi’s dad sometime around 2008 at an autograph signing. As Ovi was signing, We could hear the 2 of them laughing at the other. I’ll never know what was so funny as my gramps didn’t speak a word of Russian and papa Ovi didn’t speak a lick of English. Seemed like a genuine guy. RIP

Met Ovis dad outside capital one while he was smoking a cig during the dads trip. Pretty neat.

Not surprised as seeing Obie wasn’t playing for a little something had to be up

Ovechkin was very tight with his family and loved his father dearly. RIP Mikhail

That’s sad. His dad really loved him and was proud.

Losing a parent is devastating. My mother passed in 2013 and father in 2018 and I still grieve almost daily.

  21. Outrageous-Gur4824

God bless Alex and the entire Ovechkin clan. They have been a blessing to the Washington area for nearly 20 years, have brought us a Cup and plenty more moments of excitement and joy.

  22. AbundantHypocrisy

Sad news. Condolences to the Ovechkin family from this Caniac. I was looking forward to seeing him outside on the ice Saturday night.

  23. Rumpleskillsskills

Terrible news. Mikhail can rest in peace knowing his namesake and legacy will forever live on through the ages. Thoughts are with Ovi and his family.

  25. ImSoFookinGreat

I remember watching the documentary of the players spending the day with the Stanley Cup when we won it and Ovi’s Dad seemed like a nice guy. RIP

  26. EricNCSU

Condolences to his family. That’s never an easy thing to go through.

  27. NoahStewie1

I feel sad that Mikhail won’t be there to celebrate with Ovi when he breaks the goal record

My sister worked at Kettler (now Medstar) in the Pro Shop for years.

In the early years of Ovi being here his parents lived with him and helped him in so many ways.

Papa O as my sister called him, was one of the kindest and sweetest men ever.

He used to give the people in the Pro Shop these big old hugs and he would come in with coffee and chat with them. Likewise, Ovi and many of the players would spend time bullshitting in the back of the Pro Shop back during the Young Gun Era of Ovi, Semin, Backstrom, and Mike Green.

Papa O was truly a great and nice man and he raised a good son in Ovi.

RIP Papa O, you were one of the good ones.

RIP, I hope Ovi made it home in time, I’m sure it would be devastating if he couldn’t make it.

  30. AdjectivesOfInsanity

    Hi r/caps,

By any means not a caps fan, but I’m stopping I. To offer my sympathy. RIP to Mr. Ovi.

  31. InfinityQuartz

Damn man. Hope him and his family ate doing OK

  32. BruntFCA_

Anyone wondering how arrrrrrrrrr NHL is doing with the news, I’m arguing about the Bush administrations intentions on the run up to the Iraq war.

  33. I hope all those people at r/hockey who dished on Ovi for taking time off eat shit

  34. Paper_Rain

Just terrible. He didn’t get to see his grandchild grow up. At least he’ll get to see his other son Sergei again. I lost my father 5 years ago due to a stroke a blood clot. It’s never easy dealing with the lost of a loved one especially a parent. There is no way to prepare to for it. So many different emotions you have to deal with. It’s not something I ever want to have to go through with again but unfortunately it will happen again.

  35. AbramKoucheki

I posted this in the r/Hockey post only to get hate, vitriol, and downvotes. People on the internet see everything as so black and white and the moment you don’t agree with the group think you are a disgusting piece of shit. Fuck R/Hockey.

Everyone assumes the right reaction is to spew more hate and be hostile. Ovi and the Caps have been a massive part of my life since I was a baby. Ovi and the Caps have helped me through a lot of shit in my life. Suicide attempt, family deaths, surgeries, all that shit. Watching the Caps and seeing Ovis smiling face definitely helped me through life among other things. So no I am not going to add to the hate spew thats going on right now. No I absolutely do not condone Putin or his friendship with him. I hope he can figure out a way to denounce Putin and the war (again) and do the thing that we all perceive as right. Probably not good enough for the reddit hate mob but this is an opinion coming from one real life person. Hope Ovi can move forward. I lost my cousin Leilea to cancer last year and it still weighs heavy on my family.

Had the pleasure of meeting Ovie for a MakeAWish a little over 10 years ago, while touring the Caps facility during the game, Ovi Sr. hopped in the elevator with my friend, I, and the person showing us around, he was so excited to talk to anyone (in Russian, but still.) he wanted us to take a picture with him, so we did, not knowing who he was. When he got out, the person touring us around said “Do you guys know who that is??” And when we said no they said, that’s Ovi’s dad! And if he found it fun to have fun with strangers in an elevator, you have to imagine he was just a great guy to be around in general. Big prayers up for Ovi and the fam. ❤️
