Are the Penguins in danger of missing the playoffs?

The Penguins currently have a grasp on the second wild card spot in the East but have the Islanders and Panthers just a point back. Could this be the year that Pittsburgh fails to make the playoffs for the first time since the 2005-06 season? Craig Button explains why it could happen in the latest Talking Point.

  1. There's definitely a realistic chance of the Pens missing the playoffs. If they don't find a way to prevent all these rushes against them from materializing, they'll likely finish out of the money. Even if they make it in, either the Bruins or the Hurricanes would eat them alive.

  2. Nah but always making the playoffs is great, would rather have a chance at the cup than no chance at all but this comes at the very peril of never having a top 10 draft pick unless you trade a superstar off the team; which a team who always makes the playoffs will never do.

Ovi has made it clear that he doesn't want the Caps to go into a rebuild while he's on the goal chase for Gretzky, I can see the same of Crosby asking the same.

Once he retires in 4 – 8 years time (you never know w/ hockey players, could go as long as Jumbo Joe lol) Pittsburgh is going to go hard into rebuilding the team.

  3. No. 16 of their 29 remaining games are against non playoff teams, they are two points up on Isles & panthers with 4 games in hand and 7 up on the Sabres, but Buffalo has a game in hand. If they lost 7 in a row again, sure. But even .500 hockey will get them in a playoff spot

  4. As a Pens fan, yes absolutely this is something I am constantly worried about with this years team when even times needed a wildcard, I still knew was gonna do it.

We are just far to slow and inconsistent compared to say 3 years ago where was one of fastest teams in league and only the fastest teams and one or two others really gave much of a headache. Honestly if it wasn't for Casey and P.O Joseph looking good from our young lot things would be a lot worse this season already.

  5. Ya they are, Bottom 6 scoring is an issue. I think they could still use an defenseman of any sort. And a big concern lately and something I truly think can't be ignored anymore is the goalie situation Jarry has health problems and Desmith is way too inconsistent. Getting a better goalie to pair with Harry would do wonders

  6. No use telling hextall to add anything, we all know he won’t. Because that’s the Pittsburgh way or something. None of the Pittsburgh teams ever add unless it’s the draft

  7. Does it really matter ? We have zero chance of winning, so let's make the playoffs just so we can say " wE MaDE thE pLAyOffS " & then lose in the first round again 🙄
