What sucks is he had the hardest job ever just making them competitive for the first 10-15 years. And he did it. But unfortunately he’s pushed every wrong button trying to chase what happened in 2017 and this is how it’ll end

Like Poile has made frustrating decisions but you can do A LOT worse than Poile for GM.

I regret sticking my neck out Poile the last 4+ seasons. He’s either delusional with where the team is or content with just making the playoffs like the owners are. He isn’t even accomplishing that now. Let him and Hynes both go. It’s time to clean house with the assets that can be traded.

Just about every move he makes seems like a good idea at the time. Even Turris was a good move until Turris decided to stop producing. You cannot blame Poile for that. But for every Turris move, there is a move like the one that sent Ellis packing for Glass. Ellis hasnt played at all, and Glass will probably be our 1C/2C for the next 10 years.

David Poile also was the man behind the Forsberg trade that is now looked back on as one of the most one sided trades all time. Even the national reporters at TSN give him credit for that.

I dont think the problem is Poile. The problem is Hines. You could have a player capable of 40+ goals, but he won’t see the ice unless he is willing to forecheck. Players leave Nashville and thrive offensively, but we can’t buy goals. I get why Hines is so obsessed with the forecheck, because in the playoffs Hines style of play is how you make a run in the playoffs. That is why we gave Carolina everything they could handle two years ago. If Sarros didnt get hurt last year we would have atleast given Colorado some trouble.

This team has been built to make a playoff run, but by the time we get to the end of the season our guys are just out of gas because Hines has had them forchecking more than any other team in the league. We have had a cup window, and we put everything into trying to get a cup. Some of the moves didnt go as well as we wanted. Now, out players are aging. We are not unlike the Sharks who were really good until they werent. We just arent good anymore…but unlike the sharks, we have a lot of young talent as our window is closing.

If you want to blame Poile for giving Hines too long a leash, i get that. But you also have to acknowlege that we have more young talent in the farm system than at any other point in the organization’s history. We have a goalie prospect in Askarov who will make us competitive again soon. What we dont have is top end talent from top 10 picks because we have made the playoffs every year. But he did a nice job of getting a top 10 talent like Glass, in exchange for an injury prone Ellis.

I think our cup window is finally closed, and everyone can see that with how the team is playing this year. I think that even Poile sees that now. I hope that Poile trades Sarros, Ekholm and anyone else he can get 1st rounders for this year. Perhaps we can package picks to move into the top 5 and get a real difference maker. Or without Sarros, we cen even increase our chances of getting Bedard this year (crossing fingers). The draft is in Nashville this year, so why not be the talk of the draft?

It is going to take us a couple of years to get out from under the contracts that we have. Unless we can move players like Duchene in the off season. We have enough young tallent that we can probably accelerate a rebuid if we an get a coach that will actually encourage goal scoring. I dont like Hines, but i get it. What the team really needs is Barry Trotz (or someone like him) – a defensive minded coach who wont handcuff the team offensively.

The final thing i am going to say is that Poile probably has a challenge that other GMs dont have. Nashville is not a traditional hockey town and our fans dont show up if we dont win. This team was one the verge of financial failure for a long time. We probably cannot afford to do a full rebuild because we could easily turn into Arizona. I think ownership knows this and that is why Poile has to do a competive rebuild. Any rebuild would have to be fast so fan interest doesnt completely disappear. This is about more than just making cup runs. It is about the survival of the franchise. It wont survive a 5 year stretch run of being horrible. But i think Poile sees that he now needs to make some major moves so that doesnt happen. I know there are haters out there, but i am actually glad we have Poile at the moment because his experience is exactly what the franchise needs right now so that the Predators exist 10 years from now. But that is just my two cents.
