Fucking ridiculous. He’s our best defender and is still actually performing. Has been a core player for the better part of a decade and on this team for more than ten years. Has more than paid his dues and his current performances still back it up.
Just give him term and lower the cap hit. We have with many other players in similar situations.
I don’t mind them being stingy about term. Look at the Oshie Kuzy Carlson and Backstrom contracts right now. Sure they “deserved it because they’re a part of the core” but it’s absolutely fucking us as they’ve gotten old and hurt and produced less. They’ll always be legends in DC and so will Orly but you have to learn from the cap hell we’re in right now.
Try and flip him for a first, sell Eller, gustafson, tvr, Jensen, Mantha, whomever, we need to build for the future
I could see him wanting a 6 year deal and the caps countering with 4. He’s gonna be 32 going into next year, but he’s by far the most complete defenseman on the team. The AAV absolutely has to be between 5.5-6. Maybe up to 6.5.

Losing Dima would be a huge loss, but it’s looking more and more likely.
If you can’t get it done, trade him. My potential players to get traded list just got longer
If they don’t extend him they absolutely need to trade him at the deadline. Can’t let him walk for nothing and the Caps aren’t even going to the playoffs
Trade these guys away we need some d for next year I’d rather have TVR than Orly at this point we have two 23 year olds on the roster the rest are getting up in age.
Orlov deserves a bigger contract but it will be from another team

Orlov is the only defenseman on the roster worth keeping. I’d trade all of the others away to keep him. If he’s gone then you gotta start the rebuild around an aging Ovi asap.
