Should We Prepare For A Quiet Avalanche Trade Season?

The Colorado Avalanche have been buyers at the trade deadline over the past few seasons, and the general consensus is that they will be again this year. But the trade deadline for this season for the Avalanche is going to be a tricky thing.

When a team is active at the deadline like the Avalanche have, at some point all your big trade chips start to wear thin. The Avs still have some prospects and picks they could part with, but going off of past seasons, they don’t like to give away either so easily. Could they? Sure. Will they? That’s a difficult question to answer.

The Avalanche also are not big on rental players. They entertained it last year with Claude Giroux, but it is not something they frequent year after year.

Once again, the Avs are attached to some of the bigger names in the market, like Ryan O’Reilly and Jonathan Toews. It will take some creativity to bring in names like that, which the Avs could be willing to do. But we also should prepare ourselves for the Avalanche to be on the quiet side. Not for a lack of trying, it’s just they lack what other teams can sell.

We break it all down as well as look ahead to this weekend’s back to back against St. Louis and Edmonton.

  1. The Avs aren’t set up to make any big time moves..
without gouging their future contention plans.

ok, let’s say they take back an over ripe O’Reilly. or a downtrodden Toews.. rentals at best and cap hit vs. giving up role/prospects

that doesn’t replace the hole that’s been left from the “Kadri” move..

Kadri was the mvp of the season .
We resigned Nischuskin for big $ over him.. which was a coin flip.
how’s that worked out so far though?

If the Av’s don’t have a full healthy lineup to squeak into playoffs..

it’s going to take another season to become a threat for another championship..
with smarter off season management of core type players.

    Tough job 🤦‍♂️

I would have done my best to retain Kadri and Nischuskin,
    And let Manson walk..

  2. Kadri has 20g’s 20a’s in 50
    Games compared
To a total of 26 total points from Nischuskin and Manson combined this season..’🤷‍♂️

  3. It sucks that you guys don’t do live vid’s..

    I can understand though,
because you guys don’t really know hockey.

    Before any stupid responses..

What is the highest level of hockey you played,
and with what organizations and leagues??

    Yep.. let’s get Ryan O’Reilly
    Or Toews..’🤮

  4. This team needs a jolt. No way they’re winning the West let alone a Cup with the current roster.

  5. We are so strapped with assets this year but I'd be ecstatic if we just went full ltir and somehow got Chychrun to bolster that defense because boy are the injuries hitting us so hard there.
Having said that I'd almost guarantee we won't make any big moves, it's not Sakics style. Last year was the only year they went after more than fringe bolstering

  6. This is the time to trust in the Sakic management team, they will find a way to fill the holes they think are there ,,, O’reilly and a dept D

  7. I’ve been having this conversation with my dad and I agree in saying it’ll be quiet for the trade deadline. Go up and down the roster, who do you get rid of? Once Landy is back and Helm, roster looks great and now some new depth guys have had some experience and can continue to develop in the minors. So we aren’t the number one contender this year, we still have a shot and there is always next year 🤷🏼‍♂️

  8. Quite a few folks seemingly think this team, without making any moves, doesn’t have a chance to win the west so I’ll pose a question to those folks. Say they get Landy back mid-March and all but EJ on the backend. Who in the west do you think is unbeatable? I mean, it’s a big “IF” with this squad this season but success in the playoffs is all about peaking at the right time which includes being healthy. IMO, if they have all their key players in the lineup the last month of the season and going into the playoffs, I see the Avs as the favorite to once again represent the west in the finals. There just aren’t any great teams in the west right now and neither are going to be odds on favorites to beat a healthy Avs squad even if they don’t make a single move at the deadline.

And I’ve said it many times that I think Landy returning is the key to this. He brings so much to the table with both his play and leadership and if he’s truly on a trajectory to return in March, I don’t think the Avs need to make any moves. Just my opinion but even with all the adversity, the Avs are quietly 9-2-2 ever since the loss to Chicago.

  9. If Landeskog will not be able to make it who will play 2c? Composer failed, Newhook failed, and there is no option without Landeskog. Get Henrique!

  10. We gave away all of our draft picks last year…Lets not keep doing this…need some fresh talent in the pipeline.

  11. They definitely need to keep the 2023 1st round pick. I'd like to see them get Toews because if Rodrigues and Compher walk, they might be able to resign him to a short-term deal. He's one of the best face-off guys in the league and would be a game changer on the power play and penalty kill. That being said, it's too risky of a trade for a possible rental, and they'd probably have to give up Oskar Olausson. I do think Toews would waive his no-trade clause to come to Colorado he doesn't seem thrilled with being part of the Blackhawks rebuild, but the Avs don't have much to trade for him.

  12. The asking prices for these guys are just way way way too high. Which is odd because you have supply far exceeding demand. If the prices drop closer to the deadline, maybe we could go for one of these guys but I just dont see the value

  13. I couldn't agree more in regards to faceoffs . One of this teams biggest weaknesses . If they can find a way to get Radar back, I think it will fill a HUGE hole, and help heal some old wounds for the team, and the fans. I hated how that all went down and He is still one of my favorite players. And what is there to be bitter about still? He moved on, and ended up winning a Cup. The Avs moved on and eventually won a third Cup. A Healthy Radar could be just what this team needs for another run. SDMF

  14. I’d rather take our chances with this roster this year and preserve our ability to get future cups.

  15. Winning the Cup….sometimes is like winning the lottery. May you get what you wish for, and wish for what you get. Injuries? Or maintenance ?. 💙❤ never give up…… never surrender 😎

  16. I'm homeless at a desperate and violent homeless shelter. I am peaceful and an artist. I miss watching the Av's play. Wishing to watch a game…….
