[Rawal] I expected to see Landeskog skating again when I stopped by Family Sports Wednesday. I did not expect to see Makar. Judging by my mentions, a lot of people think it may be too soon.

2nd Tweet: [Rawal] “I’m not a doctor. I understand everyone’s concern, though. Head injuries are no joke. Had a few myself. That being said, this is all part of the process. Skating today doesn’t necessarily mean he’s rushing back and playing ASAP.”

  2. I get that people like to err on the side of caution nowadays on concussions, which is actually good thing. But we’re not doctors, and even if someone here is, they’re not Makar’s doctor. We don’t know jack shit about the situation. And like Rawal says, skating and ice training does not mean he’s going to play on Friday. Could just be testing out how he feels.

  3. It absolutely is not too soon to start skating on his own without contact. There is no benefit to “bed rest” longer than 24-48 hours after a concussion. In fact, prolonged rest has been shown to result in delayed recovery and worse outcomes. Early adoption of cardio exercise at levels below symptom threshold has been shown to decrease recovery time.

There are way too many Twitter/Reddit/internet doctors who have no idea what they’re talking about. “He should just sit out the rest of the season!” is based on nothing, and isn’t how concussions work. The Avs do not want to jeopardize the health of the greatest defenseman of our generation the year after winning the cup. They’re not going to rush him.

Edit: I’m a PT who has worked on multiple concussion rehab teams.

I feel honored just sitting here at family sports watching my kid practice knowing the AV’s were just here a few hours ago. I see them a lot, but I make sure to never bother them.

Makar needs to be taking it easy, doing things that don’t bring on the symptoms again or make them worse. He absolutely should be as careful as possible and take as much time as he needs plus some.

If skating is fine, go for it…but he needs to be listening to his body as carefully as possible.

All of the internet doctors right now.

Is exercise bad for concussions or something? Why would it be weird to see Makar skate?

Why can’t he skate? Do hockey players really fall that much just skating without an opposing team chasing them? Thought skating was like walking for them.
