Montreal really screwed up at 3.
Hughes/Seider would have been a pairing that could have the same potential as a Byram/Makar pairing. Just imagine what a renewed Detroit/Colorado rivalry would be with all of those guys involved
As a Wings AND Yotes fan (grew up in MI, live in AZ) I refer to both Zadina and Hayton as "Not Quinn Hughes".. I consider both of them draft busts, but surprisingly, after this season, I think Hayton might have the better chance of salvaging a halfway decent career. Not 4th overall caliber, but potentially playing to the level of where he realistically should've been drafted, slightly outside top 10. I think his opportunities are better suited to him as well, where he can carve out a reliable position on a struggling team trying to rebuild. In my mind, the Wings should've gotten whatever they could for Zadina at the deadline and should find a way to cut-bait over the offseason and spend a little cap to sign a replacement and move on.
Pretty sure I remember reading somewhere that Zadina told the Coyotes to not draft him. I could be wrong. Of course Zadina was overrated as a late bday CHLer. Only 2 points in 25 Czech league games in his true DY. Extra year of junior to stat pad in the Q against weak defense and goaltending to inflate his stock.
Quinn Hughes first overall
If Detroit picked Hughes I think we most likely don't pick Seider. We would have chosen a center for sure. In Hindsight Hughes/Seider sounds amazing, but Mo wasn't a top consensus pick and everyone besides Lego thought Yzerman lost his damn mind picking Seider at 6th overall. Not picking Hughes is a blessing in disguise. And also Zadina is NOT a bad player, I would say he was really good this year in most aspects of the game. His only problem was finishing at the net. He get that part of his game together nobody is talk about why we chose him over Hughes!
Honestly Gio your analysis is usually spot-on. No one gets it right every time, but you add more value than 90% of the mainstream analysts. You definitely nailed this draft.
I’m still mad the Wings didn’t pick up Hughes
Literally, thank you Montreal and Arizona.
Quinn Hughes small Body every one passed on when Burke said Detroit was Shocked
Hughes maker or woo pairing imagine
Barret Hayton shows potential of being really really good, but the problem is that it would take a lot to develop him and the Coyotes messed him up in development already in his first years, and this past season he started taking steps in getting better. Everyone remembers that amazing goal he made, if he learns how to do that more he will be a top 6 center.
shits on hayton, dude has 24 points in 60 games which is awesome production
Holland should have picked Hughes. Holland also should have picked Zegras. Sorry Edmonton!
Funny that I was questioning Detroit taking Zadina over Hughes at the time, Detroit need help on defense at the time. I was shocked he fell to Detroit but he has turned out to be a poor player in Detroit’s system but maybe with a change at head coach that might help. Zadina I think might be traded away if he does not produce, he is struggling on a poor Red Wings team. Hughes
As an AZ resident and long time fan of the coyotes. I was surprised with the pick, and then that turned to disappointment in the couple years that followed. I don't think it was necessarily on Hayton, I think they rushed his development. But this season showed that there is some promising potential. The new head coach has worked with Hayton in the past, and you can definitely see that he knows how to get the best out of him. Watching the exit interviews this season I found out that coaching and training staff asked Hayton to drop weight to improve his skating. Which is something you pointed out in your video. He did just, he dropped a pretty significant amount of weight and has been doing extra skating drills. If he continues to work as hard as he did this last season, under coach Tourigny, I think Hayton can redeem his draft position.
Flames would say the same where: Canucks picked Juolevi over Tkachuk!?
I still think Hayton will be a good player. He's just coming along at his own pace– I don't think being a 50 – 60 point, shutdown 2nd line center is out of his reach in his prime. Hughes though… how long before he's over a point per game? =O He had a subpar defensive season -> He addressed it and said he was going to work on that over the summer and next season -> He became more than just defensively responsible. Now this time at the end of year presser he mentions his shot/overall shooting game. This is HUGE cause if he can get the puck to the net with a little more regularity, I could totally see him breaking 90 or even 100 points one year.
Zadina will never do well unless he starts off the season hot. He plays scared during low production and plays like a stud who can't finish when he's netting goals
The first couple years with Hughes people were critical (rightfully so) of his poor defensive play. It was this past off season that something in him (and EP40 too) just changed and he became a much better all-round d-man. While he will never be a big physical force of a D like Chris Pronger or even Ed Jovanovski, if paired with a responsible defensive d-man who is also fast, I think we Canucks fans will enjoy his play for the next decade or more.
Dahlin towards the end of this last season looked pretty good. I thought he was wasting valuable time in Buffalo and he wasn't projecting like he was supposed to before, but he is starting to look first over all. And a little feisty. Buffalo is not the same either. Most of the guys in the top seven are panning out now. Actually all of them are doing well. Don't think you could knock any of their play. Just be ranked different. Adam who was drafted eighth over all has made some big strides this year. The way he is playing puts him in the mix. I had thought a lot of these guys would be busts, but schools out on all of them. Hard to judge young guys on teams lacking talent.
A jiffie down below says Makar is generational and Seider only a mere franchise type. Rack up Seiders pre NHL awards compared to Makar, how can idiots out there say Moritz only apexes at the top 32nd franchise Dmen in the NHL or even top 15 only?
Seider is 6ft 4 200lbs with a 7ft wingspan, skates like the wind and already can knock dudes down with authority, and get points.
Seider
80 games with 151 career hits and 161 blocks
Makar 5ft11 187lbs
178+ games with 152 career hits with 193 blocks
Which projects as the player you would rather have?
Hayton is a WJC legend. Let's hope he can reach his potential.
