I stumbled upon this post on the New Jersey Devils subreddit, mentioning how the Devils were oh so close to the 2020 Stanley Cup Play-In Series, and by default the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The post put an emphasis on the game played on February 4th of this year, where the Montreal Canadiens bounced back and defeated the Devils in the shootout. This was a performance highlighted by former New Jersey Devils star Ilya Kovalchuk, and his dagger in the extra-extra frame. The funny thing about this game, as highlighted by the post on Reddit, is that the outcome could have vastly shifted the entire landscape of the 2020 Play-In Series today; altering who would face the Pittsburgh Penguins, and who would have a chance at a lottery pick at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

The draft is stacked with guys like Alexis Lafrenière at the top, with Quinton Byfield, Tim Stützle, Lucas Raymond, Alexander Holtz, Jamie Drysdale, Marco Rossi, Cole Perfetti, Jake Sanderson, and Yaroslav Askarov rounding out the top 10. The rest of the draft has a ton of great talent as well, like Anton Lundell, Kaiden Guhle, Dawson Mercer, Braden Schneider, Dylan Holloway, Hendrix Lapierre, Connor Zary, Justin Barron, Jack Quinn, John-Jason Peterka, William Wallinder, Rodion Amirov, Jacob Perreault, Seth Jarvis, Ty Smilanic, Jeremie Poirer, Noel Gunler, Mavrik Bourque, Lukas Reichel, Tyler Kleven, Ridly Greig, Justin Sourdif, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Jake Neighbours, Luke Tuch, Helge Grans, Jan Mysak, Michael Benning, and Antonio Stranges.
The current NHL Draft Lottery odds, go in order as the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks (Senators), Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes (Devils), Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks (Devils), Nashville Predators, Toronto Maple Leafs (Hurricanes), Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders (Senators), Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes (Rangers), Pittsburgh Penguins (Wild), Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning (Sharks), Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and Boston Bruins (Ducks).

I saw the title in my notifications I thought it said that he screwed the Habs over, was about to go to his house and slap the dude….
It’s probably for the best anyways. They wouldn’t have really done anything in the play in anyways. Better to get a good pick

tired of hearing how the Canadiens scrapped by to get in , instead jof buffalo or new jersey . it was fine when Montreal had almost 100 points last season and missed out . so maybe they got on the right end of the cut this time . boo hoo
That 3pts because Montréal has the tied breaker if the 2 are 500 record
To put this over the edge if the Devils won their Home Opener, the 4-1 game vs the Panthers or this game we would've made the play in.
Thanks Kovy!
I sorta hope Habs lose as they need a Cole Perfetti or Marco Rossi talent going forward. I'll just enjoy the games against the Penguins not minding what happens.
Don't you think the Devils are salivating at the thought of another 1st Overall pick?
I remember that game it was a good one.

These commercials are getting outta hand! 2 mandatory commercials every few mins! I watched like 7 of em this video alone
Hmm interesting to see!!
Suppose MTL loses in the first round and drafts AHEAD of NJ with a lot of lottery luck.
Rub the salt in the wound.
nah, i rather have the higher lottery pick than play in a play-in round only to get our skulls bashed in and swept by a team like the Penguins. Kovy was just scoring one more goal for the Devils by getting them a top end talent for the future to have long term success instead of 5 seconds of fame before losing in a play-in
Why do these teams want this playoff spot??😂. I’ll take a spot in the top 7 in the lottery. But then the playoffs will be cancelled and we don’t have to worry about this. 👍
Destiny has the last laugh! No play in for NJ and no LaFreniere for Montreal. It hurts MTL most, if so goes down.
It’s probably for the best. I don’t think MTL will do much either, but they’ll be better games than the Devils I think.
Hey LR just want to let you know a facebook page called http://www.hockey30.com is using your thumbnails on its page.
It's almost as if the Devils are, dare I say, a Micky Mouse franchise? They're leaving NJ sometime this decade. It's a forgone conclusion. Fans don't want to go to the games, players don't want to play for them and management, well…. As we can clearly see they have no idea what they're doing.
Don’t feel badly for those guys! How many first over all picks do they have now?
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that 23 and 24 were Chicago and Montreal, two huge tv markets. If 23 and 24 were Florida and New Jersey would there be a 24 team format? Doubt it
As crazy as it sounds Kovy leaving helped the devils that contract was BRUTAL
Has usual, Montreal Canadians smarter and luckier then most of those new teams !!!!!! BTW, A. L. is our! So yeah, we lose in 3 against penguins!
So when Montreal gets first overall (cause Domi is not playing in the playoffs, not a chance) that will mean that Jersey got burned for a generational player by none other than Ilya Kovalchuk.
