  1. I said it immediately when it became official that Huberdeau was going to replace Gaudreau and Tkachuk that Calgary is going to dive. Huberdeau is a very stylish high risk-high reward guy but he is no leader. He does not drag his team to wins or long playoff runs.

Even though Florida isn't doing that great they still won that trade by a wide margin.

  2. As a flames fan I think the issues start at the top. This team hasn’t gotten close to wining a cup since their last 1 20 years ago but Tampa has been there 5 times since 04 and won the cup 3 times… why?? Because Calgary’s ownership refuses to commit to a rebuild. We need to blow it up and rebuild the organization from the top down. The flames have some good pieces for the future like Wolf and such. If they commit to a rebuild they could become a deadly team in a few years. However I don’t think sutter should be crucified for the team’s performance. Calgary fires their coaches quickly and it doesn’t allow the team to develop a culture. Let sutter coach out his contract, hold onto your picks, and see what happens in 2 years. Worst case scenario if in 2 years you’re in the same spot just zap him in the final year of the contract and start the rebuild. I think it goes without saying however that Brad is gone at the end of the season. I don’t see ownership resigning him at the end of the season considering the team he assembled hasn’t been able to cut it.

  3. I don't think anyone worth their salt thought Huberdeau was better than Tkachuk, but lets not forget the Flames were put on the defense with Gaudreau signing in Columbus and Tkachuk requesting a trade. Given that situation, Flames did extremely well in a tough situation which could have went much worse.

  4. I spent this morning looking into stats for my Flames. I think last season was a result of good coaching and a load of career years for the top line and Markstrom. Markstrom's year last year was significantly better than he'd ever played before and is looking increasingly like an outlier. All you say Markstrom's play is terrible and probably the biggest single reason the Flames are doing so badly. You also can't blame an increase in shots faced/60 as they're broadly the same. I agree that this team has no star player and is struggling as a result. Huberdeau could be that guy, but he's really struggled. Overall we're scoring 0.5 a goal less and conceding 0.5 a goal more per game than last year. No wonder we're struggling.

Taking a step back, this team has been inconsistent for Treliving's whole tenure. Only made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons once and only won 2 playoff series. I don't think is all on Sutter, but I don't think he's getting the most out of these players either. Ultimately we won't make the playoffs. Who knows what will happen this offseason!

  5. I think the next step in GMing will be when to know when to take a step back, even as a contender. The Flames were fucked. Gaudreau wanted out and so did Tkatchuk. There was no winning this. I think they should've accepted taking a step back this year, kept Tkatchuk to move him at the deadline and place their pieces for next season. I DO NOT think trading Tkachuk for Huberdeau and Weegar is a smart idea: Huberdeau's value comes from how well he plays with Barkov. I can't believe this comes as s surprise to anyone.. have you watched them play like… ever?

And also… this trend of trading for players and then signing them for 8 years before you've seen what they can do with your team has to die. It's horrible, Gms are doing it because they feel they have no choice and it's fucking their teams long term so bad. Agents are just eating them up. Trade for guys with no contracts at the deadline, see what they can give you, then talk extension. Traveling thought he was saving his job by bringing Huberdeau and Weegar and giving them lengthy extensions. Me thinks that will be what kicks him out of there.

  6. "They got an upgrade!" is what I heard after the moves made in the 2022 off season. I cringed when a number of hockey analysts said that.

And it's exactly what I DIDN'T say when Gaudreau and Matty left. I called it. The players they got back were coming from a team that was far superior and were not going to reproduce the same results they had in Florida.

  7. So frustrating because I thought they should of rebuilt when they lost to Dallas. Instead they dug in with Markstrom to keep trying to make a run in the playoffs with that core. The core leaves/trades and they gamble on new hired gun players and it didn't work. Now we're stuck in the middle again for who knows how long .

  8. treliving giving huberdont that extension without playing 1 game for the Shames will seal his fate as gm….thats not a Sutter type of player….

  9. Sutter has a right to be pissed of for the situation they are in, but a good coach also needs to be able to self reflect and criticize their own decisions. And I'm not sure if Sutter is doing that.
And some of the decisions he has made have been downright weird
-Lucic and Lewis in the top 6
-Markstrom playing too often when Vladar has clearly deserved the starts till Marky finds his game
-Ruzicka being demoted from the top 6 after being on a point per game pace
-complete neglect or hesitation to play young players (Philips got 18 minutes in the NHL before being sent down and it took Sutter nearly 45 games to give Pelletier a chance)
    -Starting 2 D-men in 3 on 3 OT
-4th line on the ice at the end of a game when a goal to tie is needed
-Keeping lines together too long that clearly aren't working as well as they should (ex. mang-kadri-dube, huby-lind-toff), and lack of patience with lines that look to be on the verge of breaking out

I'm certainly missing some things from this list, there have been many times this year where the decisions he has made have baffled me.

  10. I'm glad more players are standing up against the style of coaching Sutter uses. There's a difference between tough love and just verbal abuse when it comes to coaching and I think as we get more and more understanding of the damage that kind of abuse causes we will end up getting better players out of it, from junior up to the NHL level

  11. The real problem with the Flames is that they have too many Canucks! The Canucks hired too many Bruins!

  12. Unless Murray Edwards sells the team, nothing will change, he sucks.

They've gone through numerous coaches since the lockout all with the same middling results. I'm not being a Sutter defender, and I think he's past his best before date, but….

After that who will want coach The Flames? That to me is an indictment of a larger issue.

Murray Edwards is a shit owner who only cares about counting receipts and getting his greedy mitts on the public treasury.

  13. Huberdeau has about half of the goals & assists that were hoping for/ that signed up to do. So this creates a problem – for the team & for Treliving given the 8 yr timeframe. Tkach & Gudr leaving was a massive problem to solve – so much of it was just a bad situation with the only other option being to rebuild. A shame. Sutter does seem very boring/difficult tho but without Hube as a star – tough job for him too.

  14. The reason people have a problem with Sutter is very simple….90% of the people under the age of 30 are mentally and emotionally WEAK!! It’s EVERYWHERE, from sports to everyday people and it’s infecting our military (at least the United States military. As an almost 40 year old fully disabled combat veteran myself seeing what has happened to society but especially the military makes me sick to my stomach. We know who’s responsible for it so there’s no need to point out the obvious. I mean if you don’t believe me, just look around!

  15. While I'm very disappointed in the Flames this season, they're pretty much where I expected them to be. There's no way that Huberdeau was going to replicate his performance in Flordia, that edition of the Panthers had much better offensive depth than this edition of the Flames.
That means the team defense and goaltending has to make up for the net loss of offensive output, which unfortunately hasn't happened.
This seasons Flames are struggling to score goals and the goaltending has been inconsistent at best.

  16. Players for the most part are delicate flowers now? Can't take criticism? I miss the days when men played in the NHL

  17. Crazy is that…..Jon Cooper has won 2 consecutive Stanley Cups. 3 Straight Stanley Cup appearances. Never been a Jack Adams coach of the year.

  18. I’m just not a Sutter fan at all, seems like the type of coach who is stubborn and stuck in his ways instead of looking at the team he has and utilizing it to the best of their ability. Good coaches can get the most out of their players, Sutter instead tries to force them into a style that isn’t what they are then berates them when they lose. Then when he treats the rookies like crap, whether he meant it as a joke or not, it’s no wonder he loses the locker room. It’s all negative from Sutter, no positive

  19. You just said Hanafin was their best defensemen this year? You haven't been watching many flames games then. He's been a defensive liability

  20. Flames need to cut ties with the Sutter family and forget the local boy attitude, their family farm is hours of drives away from C-town. I didn't think CGY would lose their mini P Kane in Gaudreau and Thachuk, Monahan has sadly been injury prone too. I don't think Sutter is the answer

  21. Sutter isn't the problem. He sees every lost faceoff, every missed assignment, every mistake. That's his job. He expects the best of his players as he should.

  22. Calgary isnt the same team as last year. Huberdeau needs someone to pass to. Khadri isnt that guy… Last year you all wanted to get Darrel Sutter tattoos. All muppets… This is not at all the same team as last year. Im sure Sutters learned his lesson from LA. List of a buncha coaches that left after getting the JA…. scotty bowman, whats your point.

  23. Goaltending will affect the team. Markstroms performance is a key negative factor. Both Huberdeau and Kadri are flat but will be better, but it may be too little too late. Huberdeau is feeling the pressure that comes with the big paycheck. I like Sutter and his style. But he needs to bend a bit and try to help Huberdeau get his game back before he becomes a Pulijarjvi like dud.

  24. Maybe the NHL just doesn't know how to pick the "best" coach. Maybe it's more about politics than coaching ability. I really don't know. I'm just posing the question. But the number of coaches who stayed with their team after winning the Jack Adams trophy is incredibly small. It's gotta be more than just coincidence. What do you think?

  25. Flames had a power play. Seven times had possession, seven times skated to the offensive zone and dumped the puck in and promptly lost possession and the opposing team dumped it out. Seven times in a row. On the same power play.
