You see the answer by the comments, but it also highlights the importance of 75% retained on O’Reilly.

The cap and money in general should be meaningless for the Leafs. We should run out and trade for Patty Kane, Timo Meier, Jacob Chychrun and Tanner Jeannot and spend whatever the hell we want to, on salary. What da fuck are they going to do, to the team that basically keeps this entire league afloat? WOOO HOOOOO. 🙂

Why don’t they just leave Murray on LTIR until playoffs. Gives him time to heel and is more cap space?

Activating Murray off LTIR and Benn going through waivers today is gonna leave us with ~$2M in cap space. However, if we assume Knies is going to be signed later in the season that’s another $925k gone leaving us with ~$1.15M space to work with. It’s enough to add one of the rental D-men (like Schenn or TVR).
The caveat here is I’m not certain on how Knies’ cap hit is calculated, when you fool around on capfriendly it seems as simple as I laid out above but I’m not 100% that’s how things actually work.

I mean, in theory, if we had to we could keep Murray on LTIR until playoffs. Obviously not ideal but that option does exist (as it would with anyone) if we had to use it. Given the gap between us and Detroit/Buffalo there is almost no chance we finish worse than 3rd. Montreal did it Price and he basically took them to the final during the Covid lockdown year. It could remain an option if the right deal is available.

I have an idea to get more cap space we can send out the 3.5 million dollar 4th liner who’s stat lines look like binary code
