Let’s go over a few tidbits from Jim Benning as to why the Vancouver Canucks didn’t buyout forward Brandon Sutter.

Furthermore, let’s infer why former Canucks forward Josh Leivo signed with the Calgary Flames, despite being offered the same amount of money on a contract with the Vancouver Canucks.

This comes after both the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks got eliminated from the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs involved sixteen teams, which were the Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals, Philadelphia Flyers, Montreal Canadiens, Carolina Hurricanes, New York Islanders, and Columbus Blue Jackets in the East, and the Colorado Avalanche, St. Louis Blues, Vegas Golden Knights, Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes, and Dallas Stars in the West.

The Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Dallas Stars in the 2020 Stanley Cup Finals in Game 6 to win the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Vegas Golden Knights got eliminated by the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Finals in Game 5, and the New York Islanders were eliminated by the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6.

Of the Conference Semi-Final matchups, the Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks, and Philadelphia Flyers have been eliminated.

Teams eliminated from the first round of the 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs are the St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames, Arizona Coyotes, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Montreal Canadiens, Carolina Hurricanes, and the Washington Capitals.

The eliminated teams of the 2020 NHL Playoffs from the qualifying play-in series are the Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, Nashville Predators, Minnesota Wild, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Florida Panthers.

This also is taking place a few days after the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

  1. if it is true, sucks that Leivo would rather play for Calgary than us. Also, without much cap, we didn't have a good chance of signing him again unless we traded a benn or baertschi anyway

  2. It makes sense, since drafted by the leafs, all he has been looking for is consistent play time. On the flames, Leivo is pretty solid 3rd line player. Great career move for Leivo.

  3. leivo could possibly sign with the canucks next season when they have more cap, but most of that will be for hughes and pettersson so who knows.

  4. Also with Marky and Tanev both signing over there could of had
something to do with his decision as well who knows.

  5. The advantage the Flames offer is that they're a team with very few right shot forwards and a decent amount of skill in their bottom 6. Leivo will most likely play right wing on the third line to start the season and if there is an injury in the top 6 he might be moved up to the first or second line. With Dube, Ryan, and Bennett as potential line mates on the third line there is potential for him to score at a 0.50 point per game pace from the third line, and if he ends up with Tkachuk and Backlund or Gaudreau and Monahan he could do far better than that.

Beyond that, I think there is also probably a question of whether there is room on either team for him long term, and with Ryan's contract ending next season the Flames would be in a position to give him a decent raise if he earns it.

  6. Have you been to Vancouver? Spend time there? Have you been to Calgary? Spend time there? That’s enough of the push and pull factors that would have any levelheaded adult eager to settle in Calgary for as long as possible. Oh and you’re far more likely to be part of a winning team as well. We’ve got three agents rejecting Edmonton and Vancouver in favor of the fourth most livable city in the world according to The Economist. Welcome!

  7. If we look at it, i guess Marky is replaced as good as possible, tanev is replaced by Schmidt and leivo by hawryluk. Stecher and fantenberg is the ones thats not replaced so lets hope 2 out of joulevi rathbone and rafferty chatfield will be good enough. Sven and Loui will be send down so canucks can lift up hawryluk and 7th d as fast as ferland is placed on long time injury. Hoglander and Lind might get a chance. Hoglander hasnt impressed in sweden but who knows.

  8. Leivo is also good friends with Sean Monahan, and he works out with Giordano in the off season.

  9. My take is levo hates looking at homeless people thus signing in Calgary where there are far fewer
