GAME RECAP: Penguins vs Flyers (03.11.23) | Granlund Scores First as Penguin

The Pittsburgh Penguins hosted their cross-state rivals Saturday afternoon. The Penguins jumped on the board first. Marcus Pettersson put a shot on net from the point. Rickard Rakell was in front of the net to tip the puck past the Flyer’s goaltender. Only a few minutes later, the Flyers answered back to even the score at 1-1. The rest of the 1st period consisted of back-and-forth zone play to finish it out. At the start of the 2nd period, the Flyers took a double minor penalty giving the Penguins plenty of power play time. Kris Letang set up Sidney Crosby for a one-timer at the tops of the circle. Crosby’s shot blasted past the netminder giving the Penguins a 2-1 lead. For the remainder of the period again, the gameplay shifted to the back-and-forth, hard-hitting hockey. The rest of the game had chances for both teams, with power play chances on both sides. Neither team converted on any of their chances making the 3rd a quiet period. That is until Jason Zucker tipped another shot from the point making the score 3-1. But the Penguins were not done. Jake Guentzel shot the puck into an empty net to seal the victory. But just to make sure it was secured, Mikael Granlund netted his first as a penguin. His goal made the final score a 5-1 victory for the Penguins.

  1. Gotta test those lines against another opponent, hey. Good for Granlund and A. Nylander.

  2. Great work by the boys this afternoon. Nice to win the season series over our instate rival. Whatever you do keep Zucker on fire, keep DeSmith sharp for his astonishing performance tonight, and lets take the better half of this game to take down the Rangers tomorrow.

  4. Finally put together a solid game and didn't blow it? Awesome! The big test is tomorrow though. Hope they can carry this momentum on to play well against a totally stacked Rangers team.

  5. Hext knew what he was doing when deciding to trade for Granlund while giving up McGinn and Bleuger who haven't been consistent scorers for a while. This team has a bright future 🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧 and one more for Grandy 🐧

  6. Is Guentzel a 20 goal empty net scorer yet? Can we get some power play shots from the slot, please? Stop the no look passes, Heinen. Nice game all. LGPs.

  7. Solid game all around by the Pens. I think tomorrows game against the Rangers will be determined by how good Jarry plays.
