GAME RECAP: Penguins vs. Lightning (02.26.23) | Keeping Momentum

After getting back into the win column yesterday on the road in St. Louis, the Penguins headed back home to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning. The game started off perfectly for Pittsburgh: Drew O’Connor deflected his fourth tally of the season under four minutes into the contest. Then, Tampa struck back. Both Cirelli and Kucherov scored within two minutes of each other. The visitors would take the 2-1 lead into the first intermission. In the middle frame, Pittsburgh had to kill a tripping call on Evgeni Malkin somewhat early. Not only was it a successful penalty kill, but also, Josh Archibald found Malkin at the perfect second coming out of the penalty box. Geno skated in all alone, wiring one past Lightning goaltender Elliott and tying the game, 2-2. Later in the period, things got a little crazy. Within a span of four minutes and 27 seconds, the Penguins registered five goals. This was the second-quickest five goals in franchise history. Crosby got the party started by earning his 26th of the season following a pretty passing play. Then, Teddy Blueger crashed the net and extended the Penguins’ lead. Jeff Carter then notched his 9th of the season with a hard shot up high. Jason Zucker followed that up with a beautiful backhand from in close, bar down. Lastly, with only five seconds remaining in the period, Brian Dumoulin scored his first goal of the season with a big one-timer from the blue line. Dumoulin’s tally made it 7-2 heading into the second intermission. The final period saw Point scoring with a man-advantage opportunity for the Lightning, but it wouldn’t be nearly enough. Casey DeSmith stopped 26 of 29 shots in the victory.

  1. The team needed a victory like this against a great team, to boost their confidence! Love me some penguins hockey 🖤🐧💛

  2. The question is this, will the Pens be able to play like they have for the past 2 games? Or will they lose the next 2 or 3? Cause that's what they have done all season. Except for that 9 out 12, I think, don't quite remember, wining streak in early November.

  3. Браво Pen's!!!! Один из лучших игр этого сезона! Всем спасибо, мужики!!! 🔥🔥🔥

  4. We needed these 2 Ws. Now to pray that they get some separation from Buffy, Detroit, and Washington

  5. WHAT A SECOND PERIOD! Was really happy for Teddy, BJC, and Dumo to get on the board. Really hoping this weekend boosts their confidence and the Pens can stay in the fight.

  6. Celebrate when we can. Especially when the opposing team starts their 2nd goalie. Elliott is no Vasilevsky. Casey DeSmith has come a long way over the past month or so with Jarry's absence due to injury.

If Jarry can get back to pre-injury form, DeSmith maintains where he has gotten to, and the O and D play like we know they can, there might be hope for a deep playoff run. But they're going to have to play well in the last 23 games. Especially against Metro opponents. That's probably stating the obvious, but we know what this team is capable of.

  7. The announcer after the Lightning got a great block with the net wide open: That could save the game
Jeff Carter: Heck naw bruh I'm boutta score.
