Gabe Landeskog's Road to a Return Starts Now! But Patience is Still Necessary.

It’s true. Captain Gabriel Landeskog took the ice yesterday and started what we all hope is the road to a mid March return. Landeskog skated slowly and took some wrist shots for about 30 minutes before calling it a day, which is all we can ask for at this stage. Baby steps come first.

We promise this is the last time we talk about Martin Kaut. Apparently he asked to be traded 5 times over the last 5 years. Does it mean anything?

We also take some listener questions which include to bridge or lock up Bo Byram, will EJ retire following this season, and why haven’t the Avs visited the White House?

  1. Not worried at all about anything Kaut has to say. He's actually probably right in that he should have been traded earlier because trying to fit his game into the Avs style was always the classic square peg, round hole problem. I do think that EJ still wants to play, and I bet the Avs would work with him on one year league minimum deals on the condition that he knows his playing time is not guaranteed and his role will be something in the #6-8th D on the depth chart. At this point he's made his money, this would be purely for the love of playing and I bet he might be agreeable to that. As for Byram's next deal, I bet the Avs would love to lock him up long term at a reasonable number, but will he agree to that? He might be willing to take the bet on himself and sign a two year bridge (which would still leave him as RFA at the end of it, at say 2 or 2.5 mil per. Prove that he can be more durable, and then take advantage of the cap going up considerably by the time his next contract is due. Honestly, I think that is probably the most reasonable course for the Avs to take as well so you know how things shake out with a Toews extension, and probably have a good idea on what a new deal for Mikko is going to look like as well. That is also the time frame that a G trade would make more sense, and that would be an off season move anyway where they could maximize return.

  2. Kaut acting like he wasn't given a chance is hilarious, he was given nothing but chance after chance for 3 years and he never did a thing. Turning around and almost immediately making it someone else's fault makes me glad he's outta here, and like you said we got Nieto.

  3. Captain Gabe on his way back! ,,, just a question for you guys , Landy has been out almost the whole year ,,, doesn’t that mean the Avs have that cap space to use minus the time he will be back? Not 7 million but 5 million ? Isn’t it adapted to games played?

  4. At this point I want Girard to spend his entire career with the Avs and have his number retired to the rafters.

  5. I was glad that Landy’s session went the way it did. Start as slow as possible and ramp it up just a little bit each session until it reaches a point where he starts to trust it will hold up. Rehabbing is great and all but there’s no replacement for working all the muscles required to skate except for skating. If he tried to push it before those muscles in the leg are conditioned, the likelihood of re-injuring the knee increases exponentially. If there are no setbacks, I’m predicting the 3/29 game at home vs the Wild will be his return which would give him 9 games to get into game shape for the playoffs.

  6. Kaut was not even that good in the ahl also….A middle 1st round pick complaining and asking for a trade lmao… Good luck with the sharks …At least Jost went out there as are 10 pick overall and played his ass off even though he was not great offensively… U could see it kauts game he took shifts off and acted lost at times!!!!

  7. Love bo but it will be a bridge deal…. Don't see us even have the cap space other then that…I think he has to prove he can stay healthy… unfortunately that's sports in general

  8. No hype, be realistic. I will wait for a game he plays again with 100%. I still fear, his career might be over. To Kaut, it is not good by the Avs that the players hears about his trade by a player of your new team before the GM contacts you? No, that is unacceptable! Bad one for MacFarland. That is not classy! Look what they do to Bowers. He played once, had a decent game, got injured and never got a chance again. Why? You do not like him, trade him. Other players have so many crappy games, get millions, and still play for the Avs. EJ still one of my favorites, and despite the EJ haters, I hope he will play for a team next season who will still respect his work and efforts. You can never make it right to the haters, that is life. Finally, president is in Europe so they could not visit him.

  9. The Avs knew Kaut needed a minor heart procedure before they drafted him. I wonder if that affected his play on the ice this whole time? He noticably failed his first training camp fitness test AND made a big joke out of it, flopping on the ice. I sure Bednar loved that. Not sure how the next three fitness tests went, but Kaut failed this last one too. You mentioned the FO tried to give him advice on what they wanted to see. Obviously Kaut hasn't met the team's specific asks. STILL, they did him right by sending to best bud Tomas Hertl AND EVEN THEN he talks trash on his way out? This is a good learning lesson about respect for young Martin as he tries to resurrect his NHL career.
