  1. they make the trade because the griffins are not making the playoffs because the bottom 2 teams in the AHL divisions do not make the playoffs but tuscon is in position to make the playoffs. kampfer is a veteran of over 200 NHL games toward the end of his career and if hes going to get another shot at the NHL its no longer going to be with Detroit with the depth they will have on defense next year. Phoenix was probably looking for some defensive help with the AHL club for the playoffs and Yzerman probably asked him if hed like a chance to play in the playoffs this year in some nice weather to finish out the year and perhaps an opportunity to showcase for somebody that he can still play in the NHL and get a camp invite or contract in the offseason. Who better than one of the worst teams in the league? and what you said, for Detroit its another potential roster spot to maybe take a flier on a college free agent. dont overlook how good john lethemon has been for the walleye this year either. as good as Cossa has been of late, lethemon has been good all year .928 sv percentage is 16-1 in regulation and leads the league in shutouts with cossa in less games played. Hes young and the wings just signed him for the remainder of the year making him a restricted free agent they can resign in the offseason. He would have been able to sign with any other club as a UFA. He may not be as big as Yzerman likes in goalies now seemingly but hes likely going to be the goalie next year with cossa in GR, which means the call up to the NHL is only a phone call away if he plays well. Those 2 will get a chance to compete side by side and who knows? maybe those 2 end up the goalie tandem in Detroit in a couple years if they continue to produce the way they have next year.
