Should the Colorado Avalanche Exploit the LTIR Loophole with Gabriel Landeskog?

The more we hear about Gabriel Landeskog, the more we think the further and further into the season he will return. Because of that, should the Colorado Avalanche exploit the NHL LTIR loophole where they can leave Landeskog and not have his salary cap number count against their cap number, make some trades to bring in some help, then bring him back for the playoffs (assuming they make the playoffs) where the salary cap goes away?

It might be difficult to answer that now, but if Landeskog is not ready to go by the trade deadline, it could be a very real possibility for Colorado.

We also talk about the under 23 list from Corey Pronman at The Athletic. On Pronman’s last list in August of 2022, he included three Avalanche players (Ollausson, Newhook, and Byram). The list looks a little different on the updated version. We discuss.

All that plus preparing for tonight’s matchup against the Calgary Flames!

  1. The quick answer to playing the LTIR game with Landy is No. Here are my reasons for it. First, Landy is not Forsberg or Kucherov in that he's not as well suited to jumping into the playoffs after not playing for a year and then dominating the game. He's not a dominating type of player and would best be served by playing for the week or two before the playoffs minimum. Second, you're talking about adding an expensive player both in terms of cap hit and assets required to obtain said player, and that is where the Avs are very poor right now. They have shown over the last few years that they are unwilling to part with top prospects or first round picks for any type of rental. If they trade those assets it would be for either a pending RFA or a player with term that they can fit into their structure. Third, contrary to popular belief, the league actually does monitor those things and wouldn't let the Avs keep him on LTIR for an extra 3-4 weeks in order to skirt the cap issues but is otherwise cleared to play.

In regards to Newhook, I look back to the start of MacK's career. When MacK first hit the NHL he dazzled everyone but felt he needed to be stronger. He came back that second season like 20 lbs heavier and his play suffered. It took him 4-5 years to really figure out his body and what he needed to do to perform his absolute best. Newhook is still going through that a little bit and he didn't have much of an off season last summer to try and implement any major changes in those things. For all of the "healthy" Avs after the Cup win their summer was basically a few weeks to just rest and recover, and then straight into season preparation. Not much time to implement many new things into his program. Even if they repeat this year they'll get a couple of more weeks during the off season which will benefit him more for next year. My bet would be that within the nest two seasons he'll be a top tier 2C in the league and hopefully the Avs can afford him at that time. He has the skills and the work ethic, he just needs to get it all put together.

  2. Shaggy, since the Avs decided to celebrate your birthday with a dozen+ goals, would you consider to have birthdays more often?
Kyle, I wish you all the joy in your life! Doesn't matter if fluky or well-deserved 😉

  3. If he legit out till the playoffs, maybe I'd do it, we are really low on high value assets though. I say make small, Cogliano type trades but this season really gives you an idea how valuable 1st rounders are, the playoffs are never as sure thing as you think
Also JL Foudy is going to end up on that list soon, he's our most exciting prospect in my opinion

  4. A bit late for that or is Landeskog out for the season? I only hope, he is not done forever. If he is not ready in March, yes get a good center.

  5. I get what you're trying to do with the Forsberg comp but Foppa was arguably the best player in the world that season.

  6. I think it's safe to say that Alex Newhook is pretty much exactly on the progression path that the organization would expect of him. He's played 119 games, has 52 points (22g/30a), is a plus 14, with 28 PIM. Roughly a half-point per game player. At 21 years old. Would they have loved to see a lot more from him in this "anything but normal" season? Of course. Is he improving as the season goes on? I think he is, for what that's worth LOL. One last thing that is kind of overlooked sometimes. The kid is TOUGH. He's played every game this season even though some of the injuries to his face could have been a legit reason for him to sit out. Nope. Keeps on hitting it, and I think it's fair to say he hits it hard just about every game.

  7. It’s an interesting question, but I say no. I want my captain back as soon as humanly possible.

  8. I get tired of the prospect conversation. Unless your prospects consist of top 10 draft picks, it's a coin toss if they end up working out at the NHL level. Look at our current roster. Primarily built through trades and free agent signings. The only drafted players we have are all top 10 picks from when we were lousy and Newhook. And you just spent a whole segment on Newhook talking about whether he's going to survive or not. I'd much rather trade away "prospects" and draft capital to sign bargain players who fit within our system. RE: E-Rod, Lehky, Nuke, Cogs, etc.
