It was Michael Peca’s 49th birthday yesterday. Captain of two teams. A talent that doesn’t get talked about today unfortunately.

The Sabres vs Sens battles in the Peca v Alfie age are core Sens fan memories. One of the greats no doubt

  2. can77991

One of my idols as a young centre man, solid face off skills, and a wicked 2 way player.

  3. Heatersthebest

He played for 4 more teams in the NHL too. Canucks to start, then at the end Oilers, Leafs and Blue Jackets

  4. GoRangers5

Mark Messier was captain for every team he played for.

  5. C_Noticles

I was pumped when the leafs had him for a bit. Would always trade for him in the nhl games back in the day

Was the biggest 2-way player I watched when I first became a fan (Leafs so I got to see him a lot). Thought he was awesome with the Sabres and Islanders and was ecstatic when we got him for a little bit.. unfortunately it was during the start of our pure dumpster fire phase but it was nice nonetheless 😂

Honestly, this is one guy that NEVER got talked about, IMHO. So odd how he avoided it. Maybe it’s different in the communities he played for?

  8. I used to think that body checking was a size thing: if you were the bigger man you’d ‘win.’

Peca absolutely changed this for me. He wasn’t a very big dude but he could absolutely paste guys. Body contact is a dark art, and this guy was an absolute master at it.

A true warrior, and absolute competitor. I never really liked any of the teams that he played for, but absolutely looked forward to the battle when playing him.

I wasn’t an Isles or Sabres fan but I loved watching Peca play hockey. Always 100% effort. Reminded me a lot of Dino Ciccarelli. If he’d won some hardware he’d probably get as much recognition as Dino.

Rangers fan here. I was supposed to hate the guy. He was one of my favorites and I even modeled my game after his. So underrated!

  11. Jagr6810

He was a great player in the oilers cup run

  12. theduder999

I still hate the Leafs and Darcy Tucker for the hip check on Peca that fucked him up. He was never the same player after that hit

  13. For as much as the post-lockout Sabres were the exciting team that should have won it all, Peca actually led them to a Cup Final. I know the man between the pipes had a lot to do with it, but it’s still an accomplishment on a historically…. underachieving team.

How good was he? We got the Peca who was alright in Columbus

I realize this is an NHL sub to talk about hockey, but as a straight man I have to note that he is astonishingly good-looking. I’d kill to look like that at 49. I’d kill to look like that now (31).

Seeing players without the visor looks so old fashioned to me now, and it makes me feel old to realize I remember him as a player haha.

  17. learn2die101

He was so fast at his prime, big contribution to the team (mostly off the scoresheet) for the season we had him.

  18. That Darcy Tucker hit was ruthless and savage…

  19. Never failed to get a hard laugh out of my grandma, every time she heard his name she was in stitches for like 10 minutes

  20. CreateorWither

I couldn’t agree more. He was one of my favorite non Habs players. Is he coaching in the AHL now?

  21. snailien

He doesn’t get talked about much today because he was just a great player without drama. I’m from Buffalo and he and Zhitnik were my favorites growing up. I’m really happy to hear he’s been able to fly under the radar and enjoy his success privately. He was a fantastic role model for me as a kid.

I had SUCH a huge crush on him when I was a teenager.

Back in the coliseum days, my uncle was a season ticket holder and gave me tickets to game 3 of the Stanley cup playoffs in 2006 as my 16th birthday present. He had presidential seats so we had access to the basement where there was a crazy buffet and we could watch the oilers walk out. My dad took me to the game and put me on his shoulders so I could see them actually walk and when Peca came out I screamed, like a deranged 16 year old girl *PECA I LOVE YOU!* He actually turned to look at me and that is still one of the highlights of my life haha.

Great, consistent player. Excellent leader. Stand up guy to the cities he’s played in. 100% a class act.

  23. skankhunt_relapse

He was a beast in the late 90’s NHL video games. His checking was in the high 90s and he would cripple guys.

  24. Striking_Economy5049

Being in the arena when he destroyed Teemu Selanne will be a highlight I never forget.

  25. h0ckey87

That gold tinted Buffalo jersey is siiiiiick

  26. GrizzlyIsland22

I will NEVER forget seeing Roloson bat the puck into the air directly to Peca for a breakaway goal in the playoffs.

  27. Owned a bar/restaurant in Buffalo and can tell you we all basically loved the majority of players in Buffalo, Peca was no exception. Whether we are doing great or more likely poorly, it is just nice to watch some sportsball. About the only thing that turns fans is bad departures, extreme poor attitudes, and TOO much off the ice misbehavior.

That team era was awesome. Games were fun to watch, we were competative, we had nice looking jerseys (seriously have no clue what they were thinking with the Buffaslug/Sluggalo and the all white ones today blow) and Rick Jeanneret was going full steam. The last decade has been rough with the sabres for being a bottom dwelling team with constant questionable trades and a captain that left a sour taste in most people’s mouth.

So yeah…we actually don’t mind a bit of nostalgia, especially with being so lucky to have players stick around afterwards and helping the community!
