GAME RECAP: Penguins at Red Wings (03.28.23) | Petry Returns to the Lineup

On Tuesday night, the Detroit Red Wings hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins took two back-to-back penalties. The Red Wings were able to capitalize on the second power-play with one second left. Only 34 seconds after their first goal, the Red Wings made the score 2-0 off a double deflection. Before the period was over, Detroit was able to strike again. The 1st ended 3-0 in favor of the Red Wings. The 2nd period was a very different story for the Penguins. Jason Zucker got the Penguins’ first goal from a quick tic-tac-toe passing combination from Ricard Rakell and Evgeni Malkin. Shortly following Detroit took two penalties and the Penguins went back to work. Jake Guentzel cashed in on the 5-v-3 to bring the Red Wings’ lead to only one. Guentzel tipped a shot from Malkin. While still on the power play, Jeff Carter’s heavy shot slowly trickled over the goal line only by an inch or two but was missed on the ice as play continued for another 10 seconds. The play was reviewed and it was called a goal. The game was tied at 3-3. The 2nd finished with the Penguins’ continuing to apply pressure on the Red Wings. The 3rd period was set up to be a battle to the finish. Detroit was able to take the lead five minutes into the period. Josh Archibald answered the Red Wings’ goal with one of his own to tie the game once again. Unfortunately, the Penguins took a late penalty. While on the powerplay Detroit took back the lead, 5-4. Using that momentum, they scored another quick goal. Before the final horn, Detroit scored one final empty net goal to end the game 7-4 in favor of the Red Wings.

  1. Unfortunate loss for us tonight. Can't blame DeSmith as defense felt absent this game, but good on the scorers this game. Had we not taken the 2 Friedman penalties and Rust's critical penalty with 4 minutes left in regulation I bet this would've been atleast a point in our books. We just need to stay out of the box the rest of the season, and play as hard as we can. Here goes to the 2017 cup matchup this Thursday against the Preds.

  2. 6 powerplays and still lose 7-4 that is beyond pathetic Casey DEPISS and the penguins played 1 out of 3 periods.

  3. show the reasons why the penalties happened, would add 2 more min and is a huge part of the game, obviously especially this one

  4. I thought 3 days ago dejan said desmith should be starter, yeah starter in wilkes barre lol

what a joke, 6 goals on 25 shots to the wings, 4 of them 5 hole or short side lol

  5. Don't deserve to go to the show, and anyway Boston will destroy this group. Really dumb late penalties and Casey's 5 hole is Grand Canyon size.

  6. Ofc see DeSmith hate. He did let some routine ones go but majority was the lack of defense. Sadly I have no hope with the current state of the team. The only consistency they show is throwing the game after a handful of great plays. Sidney/Granlund need to shoot more. They use to go for juicy rebounds, not so much anymore.

  7. It's ironic that tonight's game was against the Red Wings. I see parallels between this year's Penguins and the Red Wings of 2016. If Pittsburgh gets in, it will only be to extend their playoff streak. With a performance like this, Pittsburgh shows they do not have the makeup of a playoff team.

  8. This is why you don't play DEsmith just cause he had 1 good game terrible goal at the end should have saved that and Friedman needs to stop getting penalties costing us goals and games

  9. D-Fence, D-Fence, oh wait, the Pens have none. They constantly leave the goalie out to dry. Not just that, the Pens have NO discipline. They always take DUMB penalties. Doesn't matter who it is.

  10. Мда…. Надо лучше тренироваться и применять наиболее передовую фармакологию. Черпать знания из других спортов и черной магии. Иначе в этот раз без плей-офф. Куда смотрит руководство клуба?!…

  11. Great game pens, unreal!!! In a way I don’t want us in the playoffs to get mauled over and swept

  12. Don’t worry with DeSmith in net we should have no problem losing out the rest of the schedule no playoffs for us 😬

  13. Goalie, goalie, my kingdom for a goalie! Goaltending is the penguins crutch, why keep all those great players and not procure a quality goaltender?? You would think Hextall knows, to win the cup, you need a shutdown goalie.

  14. Who was on the ice for the first 3 goals ? Letang of course . Somebody remind him he plays Defense . He forgot . Retire already ya bum .

  15. Maybe the question everyone and even the Penguins should be asking is: Why do you even want to go to the playoffs? Only a delusional mind can see this ending in anything but misery. Sometimes just getting there isn't worth it. Hey, I'd love to race in the Indy 500, but not if my car is 15 years old, leaking oil and can't get out of 2nd gear. What would be the fun in that? Seriously, what is the benefit of the postseason at this point? Just to say they got there again. Woohoo! Is there a ring or banner for that? I know, maybe they will get a shirt that says: "I played in the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs and I'll I got was this shirt"

  16. And the Penguins Pis Poor roller coaster season continues!!! Start cleaning up the golf clubs guys and get an early tee time!!

  17. Not saying anything bad about Jarry but he is made of glass, breaks easily/ gets injured a lot good catch up in the 2nd but gave up 3 points in the 3rd
