Despite a fantastic first 40 minutes of the game the Avs had to survive the third period of this to come out with a shootout win over the Coyotes. Goals from Rantanen, Byram, and Nichushkin were enough for one point and Val’s shootout goal got the Avs across the finish line. Join The DNVR Avalanche Podcast for the postgame.

Big Val channeling his inner-'92 Foppa 🔥
Give Arizona credit their a young upcoming with young talent they gave the Avalanche a tough time of it they beat them 6- 3 all the other games was close games
Arizona is much better than they used to be-especially at home. They had the longest active home winning streak,& have already won 20 home games-right around how many the Avs have won at home. Arizona has played several close games vs playoff teams recently-home,& away-& got more than their fair share of pts in those games.
And they dont say how…just how many. How many is 7pts up on WPG-with 2 in hand,& tied with Dallss,1pt back of Minny…1 game in hand on both,& huge matchups with both next week. Not impossible to finish 1st in the west-but not likely my opinion. Youd not only have to catch Vegas, but LA also,& stay ahead of Edmonton.
But 2 seed,& winning the central is extremely possible-its in their hands. There are no guarantees,& the Avs could lose early,or go on a deep run-wherever they finish. The west is full of good teams, but unlike the east-nobody scary great-everybody has blatant flaws. But Bednar just recently said-hes told the team there are advantages to winning the central.
The advantages are-playing collapsing WPG-who has some elite or close to elite players,& a flat out elite goalie-but also has depth, leadership, blueline & chemistry questions/issues…or largely playoff inexperienced Seattle-who has depth,& a lot of good players, but no great players,or goalie that scares me.(Beniers will be great, but isnt there yet,& has never played in the playoffs-like a lot of their team. Young/playoff inexperienced teams usually dont last long in the nhl playoffs-I think NJ will also find this out in the East. Those teams will learn from it-but usually you have to lose a series or 2-to learn how to win in the playoffs…NHL or NBA)
Not a huge edge-& those teams wont be an easy out either, but Id rather play 1 of those 2-then get the Minny-Dallas winner-with home ice, than having to likely beat Minny,AND Dallas-without home ice both series-if ya finish 3rd. Avs are better than all these teams-my opinion-if reasonably healthy. But finishing 1st in the central,& 2nd in the west-would give you a slightly easier path in my opinion. Or at least ending up 2nd in the division,& not having to go to Minny or Dallas right out the gate.
It wouldnt guarantee success,& its not hopeless if ya finish 3rd…or even if ya collapsed,& ended up a Wild card-nobody would still want to play the defending champs round 1. But the easier the path-your odds go up-even if slightly. Toughest part of a Cup run is the cumlative wear,& tear,& grind. The brutal path TB had last yr-(& amazingly-this yr itll be even a tougher path to get to their 4th straight Finals)I think did play a small role,& helped the Avs slightly last yr. Avs were the better team, but the easier path also helped a bit.
Im not worried bout Giorgiev at all-hes been unbelievable lately. But come on Meghan,& Jesse…that 3rd goal might be the worst hes given up all season-that was awful. And I get it was Keller-a very good player.
But no-Im not worried bout it at all. The 2 pts is what matters,& had we lost in regulation-it wouldve been disastrous. At the time I was concerned it might cost us 1…or even 2pts. And it did cost you a regulation win probably-which isnt nothing. It does matter for tiebreakers. But he made up for it in the shootout,& helped ya survive long enough to get a HUGE 2pts. In the end,the 2pts is all ya REALLY care bout-however it happened. Going into today,id been ok with 1point-for a myriad of reasons.
Where is Blais? I'm concerned.
Not sure how anyone could blame Gorgie for ANYTHING right now. Dude has been unreal for us!
