GAME RECAP: Penguins vs. Flyers (04.02.23) | Kris Letang’s 1,000th NHL Game

After a heartbreaking loss to the Bruins the night prior, the Pittsburgh Penguins returned to the ice to take on the visiting Philadelphia Flyers. This was a special game for Kris Letang as the featured matchup is his 1,000th of his career. Letang is just the 68th player in NHL history to cross the millennium mark. Pittsburgh and Rickard Rakell in particular came out inspired in the opening period of play. The Penguins forward scored twice in the first, giving Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead heading into intermission. Bryan Rust extended that lead to three in the following period, netting home his 19th goal of the season. Tonight was a milestone night for Rust as well as he hit the 500 games played mark. Philadelphia would attempt a comeback in the third but a Ryan Poehling empty-net goal would ultimately seal this one for the Penguins as they walked away with a 4-2 victory. Casey DeSmith was excellent in the contest, making some highlight reel stops on his way to his 15th win of the season.

  3. I was at this game. The ceremony was moving and exciting to witness, and so was the game. Rakell nearly made me throw my hat, and Crosby to Rust goal was just insane. Not our best or worst game, nonetheless entertaining.

  7. The difference between Jarry and Desmith is level of athleticism and big time saves. Jarry has been the starter since Murray left and has was the starter for most of the season. All we’ve gotten is inconsistency from him and mediocre goalie play. He’s a back up in this league. Anytime he plays “good”, he seems to get better play by the boys in front of him. Name one save from the shut out win that wasn’t a can of corn. You can’t. He’s average to below average. Anytime Desmith gets good play. We always seem to win. He should be given a real chance to be the starter and move on from Jarry especially next season. I’d even love to see the Pens dump Jarry, reunite with Fleury and keep Desmith as the back up. But for now we should ride Desmith out into the playoffs. He gives us our best chance to win and make a real run at another cup.

  8. DeSmith you were awesome tonight keep it up we will need you in the playoffs! Thank you super fun to witness.
