Filipe Toledo is one of the most exciting surfers on the planet to watch. He brings a high degree of unpredictability & speed to every single wave and it seems that World Tour surfers agree he is one of the most electric surfers to ever compete.
But what is it about Filipe Toledo’s technique that enables him to surf at such a high level? Is it his boards? Is it his small-wave background? Or is it something in his fundamental surfing skills?
In this video, I try to analyse and pinpoint what it is exactly that gives Filipe Toledo his extraordinary ability in the ocean. I then go through some ways in which you can start to apply these learnings in your own surfing at a beginner to intermediate level.
This episode was brought to you in conjunction with SmoothStar skateboards – an essential surf training tool to keep for perfecting your technique.

So true so awesome thank you
I re-watch all you guys videos and I get something new out of them every time and thank you so much thank you
Het Kale, how are you doing? Firstly thank you for all your great videos. I brought a smooth star on your recommendation and I love it, it’s awesome.
But I’ve run into a bit of a problem. I skate goofy and surf regular. How do you think this is going to affect my progression in surfing? What’s your thoughts?
Just bought one! I hope i improve my style and arms positioning
scoop and clap, i try do that mostly all the time, Gerry Lopez says most modern mainstream surfers pump their boards in sections were it isn't needed therefore loosing opportunity with the wave that individual is on, how to rip, i also call scoop and clap Shane Horan style, because if you look at that guys surfing, he only pumps when he needs to, how to rip i saw this video a while ago, now in 2020 fibreglass fish board had a broken finbox(no good) so i brought this foamie called Felipe Toledo WildFire from Bondi surf culture, you should do a review on the board its actually good for people like me learning how to do the more advanced things like rotation ectara, yesterday i did this like floater re entry and it felt good , also i feel like my speed generation/flow has improved riding the foamie, lastly i did a bottom turn, hit the lip vertically trying to do a carve 360 the other day , failed but i still had fun Learning(didn't have my body compressed enough, mu upper body did the 360s but not my lower half), also may you please do a video on carves/hacks and 360s ?please (no airs) thanks you guys are rippers
Jokes on you I love surfing terribly.
OMG Kales you locked it up in one lesson. You legend out to get me a smooth star now. How did i miss this one. Cheers legend 😉
Just bought a Smoothstar after watching this, thanks for the tips.
🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Very much respect!
A surf retreat with you sounds fantastic… what I don't get is why it has to be luxurious … and why a retreat? For me surfing is also a way to go and see the world… just my thoughts and opinion.. love your channel🤙
Gabe. M. is the Best I'm from Morocco
I love this channel!!!! 👋🏼🎉☀️🌊🍰
Toledo's weakness is his body. Hes not a monster mutant like italo or medina. JJF is a great exemple of that. He could have won at least 3 titles but his body couldn't deliver such result….
You can just rid onto people’s driveways??? Without getting shot??? Australia is crazy bro
Freaking sick! I'm with swelltech
Thanks Kale Brock! I have a question: what's your opinion about the SwellTech surfskates?
White car = pipeline
I think it’s John John who surfs better than everyone else tho 😜
I subscribe to you! Felip is a monster but i still prefer your sharp powerful style!!
Love how you got shacked in a Camry barrel at 7:51. Nice.
Love the videos. You don’t need to ask people to subscribe right out of the gate.
it looks like the shoulders are moving for the eyes/head. Kind of like a gold swing with the hands and the head
Ordered
Another thing with pumping that I notice with some dudes that don’t get a lot of speed from it is they’re too front foot heavy on pumping, if you watch any pro including Felipe their back feet are heavily involved in the upward pump motion almost as if they’re doing a controlled jump. You can notice it a lot on mushy sections where they do more tik tacky pumps- back foot is elevating just as much as front front. It looks cleaner and generates more speed. Had to bring this up to a friend who’s been surfing for 12 years to notice his back foot now he throws 10 foot airs. The “heel to toe” theory is good but there’s more to it than that- I’ve seen a lot at my local spot who look as if they’re waddling down the line because that’s what they’re thinking in their mind “heel to toe”. The back foot drag is a real thing: it’s never truly discussed about for some reason because too many out there doing it ! Foot keeping weight on the fins literally creating drag and killing style
Today Filipe Toledo is World Champion 🔥
