This season has been nothing short of historic for Connor McDavid. Well on his way to becoming the first player in the cap era to hit 150 points.. no one has been close to Connor McDavid this season. However, there is one truth that remains for both Connor McDavid & the Edmonton Oilers. We break it down in this video & what it means heading into the NHL playoffs.

a good player lifts himself up
but a great player lifts his team up
-some badass hockey coach from the 80s(probably)
Winning Stanley cup requires a good team everyone will forever look at him as the best of the best I think that ultimately he can’t do it all alone his team just isn’t on his level obviously but his individual records and highlight goals will forever be the best of the best
Simply cannot be the greatest ever if you don’t win the cup. He is undoubtably the most skilled and talented player to grace the NHL, however he can’t be the GOAT without winning Lord Stanley’s Cup. I personally don’t think he would even give himself the title without his name engraved.
Hockey is very much a team sport, and therefore more difficult for one player to put a team on his back. Even so, McDavid elevated his game in the playoffs.
There are players who put up gaudy regular season numbers, but get shutdown come playoffs.
Look at Justin Verlander, who barely won his first World Series game last year, at nearly 40 years old. And even that took incredible gumption from his manager.
There are 32 teams and the Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy in sports to win. In the unlikely scenario McDavid never wins one, if he continues playing at his current level, yes, he could be considered the GOAT.
And he's still years away from the age Ray Bourque was when he finally won a Cup.😉
He's the GOAT. That won't change, Stanley Cup or not. Will he win a Stanley Cup? YES — and not only one — sooner than we might think.
Chopin never wrote an opera, but he's still one of the most important composers in music history (in that period, writing an opera was mandatory to be remembered as a great composer). What makes Chopin so important in music is his exceptional contribution and innovation to piano repertoire and approach. After him, no one would write or play piano like they used to. That's exactly what's happening with Connor McDavid in hockey. True genius doesn't need an award to be remembered and acknowledged. McDavid has already achieved what no other player achieved before him : play the game with and unprecedented speed, intensity, wit, leadership and intelligence. He makes hockey more beautiful to watch than ever, making non-hockey people watch the game more closely. Winning the Cup will more than well-deserved to such a brilliant player. Nevertheless, the Cup will simply be the topping on the ice cream — a topping that will reiterate his already more-than-obvious GOAT status.
A cup is won by a team. Individual accolades are earned by the individual. If all it took was one player to win a cup McDavid would have 5 rings already.
I think now the Edm oilers have a really good chance of winning the cup this year after how the oilers got the shut outs in a row
Nope, gotta win a cup to be the goat
The Stanley cup is a team trophy. It takes special teams to win it, but you are correct that we measure success based on championships
Yeah as long as the oilers choke I’ll be happy. Mcdavid is no good and overrated
Edmonton will lose mcdavid will finish contract and sign with the leafs when matthews leaves
Cups don’t matter, they’re more reflective of the team around the player. McDavid is already the GOAT.
If you’re looking at something as binary as this, you’re a brat. Like 13 year old girl “he doesn’t like me, my life is over” kind of brat.
NHL fans know hebis already THE best to ever touch a puck…..but he also needs a cup. And not a Ray Bourque-type cup
The greatest of all time surrounded by idiots is still the greatest of all time. It's their ability, not their trophies, that make them the greatest.
Lionel Messi was rightly considered the finest football player of all time before Argentina won the WC. Sure it's a nice topping on your ice cream but, no, it doesn't take away the man's incredible ability. The only other footballer close to Messi was Ronaldo and he's not even come close to a WC final yet there are people who rate him above Messi ! Stupid people, obviously 😉 !
he is just 26, he has atleast 10-15 years left to achieve that
As a franchise player if Connor McDavid never wins a cup it’s his own fault. Take a pay cut to make room for more talented players to join the team. He needs to do some soul searching to decide what’s more important, boat loads of cash or a Stanley cup.
I think measuring success through championships is one of the dumbest, most old-head things that occurs across all sports fandoms. I will never understand why it is considered acceptable to compare individuals without taking their supporting cast into consideration.
He is still the goat. Not winning a cup means the team behind him isn't good enough
Kinda funny how these guys seem to get one later on. Lmao eventually it will be made so. Ref on it. It how the game goes.
Until he wins a cup, there is only one Great One
This is the Oilers year !!!!!!!🎆🎇🎊💪🎉🎊🎁
I don't understand the sentiment that you have to win the cup, superbowl, world series, etc. to be the GOAT. For a though experiment, lets flip the narrative and ask the opposite question – Do all the role players (ie non superstars) on the teams that do win the stanley cup now become superstars because of that one TEAM accomplishment? No of course not. so why do you put this burden on a Connor McDavid (or Dan Marino or whoever).
A very good counter example of this is in football with Eli Manning – Giants fans can't wait to put him in the hall of fame because of the 2 superbowl wins. But look at his career statistics and they are decidely average. I don't think his superbowls made him a GOAT anymore than Connor McDavid's lack of a cup invalidates his amazing year/career stats
Relax, Yzerman didn't win a cup until his 14th season. There's time. Enjoy the road.
It's obviously wrong. I never cared what other people think. I know who I am and what I'm capable of. The Stanley cup is just a status symbol. He doesn't need a status symbol for people to know that he's the best player in the league.
He’s the goat. Cup or not. He’s a freak, looks like he should be in a totally different league that’s higher than the nhl
He was like Phil mickelson (before leaving for the shady tour)….won tons of tourneys but took YEARS to win a major
Yeah people forget that the Oilers teams in the Gretzky era also won a cup after Gretzky was traded. So the teams that won all of those cups were Stanley cup winning teams without Gretzky. But now if you bring up an issue with the Oilers. Their fans immediately throw out one name. You need a team to win the cup not just a couple of really good players
You cannot be considered the goat if your team hasn't won a Stanley cup in my opinion, simply because it's a team sport. It goes to show that even if you have the most points in the league from all the rest combined, you're not a team player and you don't set up your teammates for success, you simply cannot win. Although he has unbelievable speed and can score fantastic goals, he's kind of a puck hoarder.
Winning a cup takes a team, and being a unreal player/goat takes an individual effort so yeah he can be considered a goat
McDavid obviously isn’t the best NHL player ever if he can’t win a cup. He need several to even be considered to be honest. He’s still nowhere near Gretzky’s level.
they kinda got cheated vs colorado tbh
The age old question…every…fucking…year… since for ever….I can't believe I clicked this. Never again.
I am so sick of the GOAT talks… McDavid is an absolute beast, no doubt. And will be in the talks as one of the greatest to play the game. But with how fast paced the game has gotten, and the skills these players are obtaining, the dynamic of the game is constantly changing. Before the 2-line pass was removed, there were players who were incredible. If that had happened in the 80s, maybe Teemu Selanne would of had more than 76 goals his rookie season. Maybe we could just have a category for all the greats, and stop worrying about who could be the greatest of all time (since there is always someone who will end up doing it better in the future). And instead, celebrate all the ones who have been beasts in their day 😉
I disagree, I remember the battle of Alberta over the sweep. It’s not all about winning
Yup he bringing the cup to oilers this year
What mcdavid does that others dont is carry season after season on a bad team. Imagine if he were surrounded by talent …Put up 200 point seasons xD
You can compare both clubs but Mathews isn't comparable to Connor !! Id say Mathews 6th or 7th rn !!
I think mcdavid sould get on a better team
Well ya it's called… Canada isn't allowed or able to win the cup or both…..The NHL has no intention of seeing a Canadian franchise win it all.
I do think to be widely considered the best hockey player of all time he will need to win a cup. But honestly I think he ends up getting at least 1. But I am not an oilers fan so I can't claim to know too much about the capabilities of the Front Office.
McDavid is the most skilled player in the NHL, but is not the best player in the nhl altogether. I personally think that Mackinnon is a better 2 way and all around player than mcdavid is as well as a better team player. Like the man said, it takes 23 players to get the job done. If you look at the Avalanche the past few years, players have only gotten better when playing around teammates like mackinnon, makar, landy, etc. We cannot evidently say the same for Mcdavid and Draisatl because the truth is that they carry their team a lot of the time and their teammates around them do not improve their playstyle
Semantics. Gretzky will be the greatest player ever. McD is the best skilled player for now. But a better player will come
