Hockey develops the highest class of athletes, beyond any other sport. On ice ability is super important, but off ice pursuits such as charitable giving and fan appreciation are stressed as well. This sometimes is what separates two otherwise equal ability players. Most of the elite players have left home and family at young age to pursue the dream, and the hockey system instills these values, if earlier life didn’t. No other sport I’m aware of nurtures players, with few exceptions, to be such excellent role models.
