Too early to tell but it is safe to say not letting him play at world juniors is a mistake.
thing is people need to ask where would he learn to play in the NHL more in junior or under Martin St. Louis. I do not think Europe League or junior is where he should have been however maybe a stint in Laval might have helped him. As far as the World Juniors I am not sure if it would have helped or wouldn't have helped him hard to say when he did not go. I do feel after his suspension would have been a good time to send him too Laval for a few months and maybe call him back up late February or after the trade deadline of course if he has been playing well.
After his first few games and his inability to keep his head up ….. He needed more seasoning
100%. So dumb they didn’t send him to the world juniors and then down to laval.
He’s got A LOT to learn and the nhl is not a develpmental league
I get not letting a guy go to juniors if he's lighting it up in the NHL…but in this case it would've really helped his development and his confidence
Would have been crazy to see Slav vs Wright at the WJC
slaf is a bum, can't believe they picked a 4th line winger 1st overall lol
If you look at his season, the missed juniors is when he started underperforming. It sent the wrong signal completely that he was a full NHLer instead of going to that to an event packed with opportunities for growth.
Idk for me yes he did have some flashes in tournaments, but still never had a truly dominating season so would have tried in in a league to give him that opportunity.
So basically, Slaf is going to be the next KK. Which team is going to send the offer sheet this time?
The fact that he is a 1st overall pick shouldn’t have an impact on whether he begins in the nhl or not. It should be about his own personal development, not about what others did in the past. He would have probably benefited from playing big minutes in Europe, rather than staying in Montreal just to play bottom six minutes. I like Kent Hughes a lot, but I think that he dropped the ball with his handling of Slafkovsky’s first pro year.
He didn't deserve to make the team from what we saw in pre season. Nothing against the kid but it sends the wrong message and it's embarassing that an organisation who spends like we do end up using a 18 yo to generate interest
He should have started in the Juniors or AHL and play in the WJC, everybody was saying it.
Although it is fair criticism, I think it's a little too early to say if his development was "botched". When Jack Hughes first started in the NHL he had a terrible season and look at where he is now. Habs fans needs to be patient and management needs to make better decision.
Tbh, I think Slaf will end up becoming a top 6 player, but I don’t think he will become a superstar. Mind you it’s still early, but based off what I’ve seen, he’ll be good, but not great.
Jack Hughes took 3 to 4 years to become a super star. Everyone complaining and whining, calm down.
They should have sent him to the world juniors but otherwise it was fine
I’m bag holding Power, Laf and Slaf. I thought 1st overall picks were supposed to be good 🤔
habs cant draft or develop, another bust
Here is hoping he is stronger next season and grows into that body
It’s just a tad early to pronounce the “plan” for Shane Wright as brilliant.
Wright wasn’t good enough to play in the nhl. One goal. Habs are rebuilding. Not an ideal situation. He should have spent 1st half of season in AHL as he wasn’t getting much playing time and with less talented players. That said, he wasn’t that bad l, all things considered. See: Wright in the nhl.
Antoine famously hates Montreal because he’s butthurt he didn’t play for them. He cried because there were more Habs fans in Vancouver
To quote the great Mickey Redmond, the NHL is a tough place to learn.
He shouldnt have been in the nhl its the same mistakes the habs have done over and over again. It was apparent after he was caught with his head down over and over and not learning and get destroyed by smaller guys.. but its good to see it doesnt matter who runs the team the same mistakes keep happening. Slafkovsky might be still a decent player but he will be lucky to be a 40pts player in the nhl. But its going to be up to him what kind of player he becomes.
Superstars dont accept just being good they fix their flaws and learn from mistakes. Juraj its up to you to define the player you wanna be.
P.s. drop 15 to 20 lbs theres a reason very little nhl star players walk around at 240 lbs. The average 6'3 nhler is 215-230. Your stamina and lungs were not properly developed to sustain that added weight.
He's gonna be the next yakupov but worse
It’s gonna be a repeat of kotkaniemi. They rush these guys just cause they’re big
I remember when Lafleur played his first season, he wasn't dominant but he did put the puck in the net. It took a couple of years for him to dominate. I think Slats will become a dominant player in this league given good line mates.
Slaf will need 4 to 5 years to be the player we drafted
I'm still not sure why we didn't send him back to the Liiga. Management seems so afraid that he's gonna bust that they want to keep tight control over him, and that's likely gonna make him a bust.
I totally agree! You don’t play a first overall pick on your fourth line and ask him to play a defensive role when he’s supposed to be an offensive weapon one day! Further more you give the guy 11 monda a game and surround him with bottom feeders! What kind of message does this send him? It surely hurts vida confidence moving forward! Now is the time to give him the ice time! Our team is rebuilding! We stink! It’s ok for him to make errors like every other guy is at the moment! If you don’t wanna give him an opportunity, send him to Laval to work on his game! Let the kid get some big playing minutes! I like Marty but he used him terribly!
