It’s all going to come down to the wire for the Penguins!

The Pittsburgh Penguins got a massive win against the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night and Hunter wants to start the show by looking at the urgency and desperation they showed in this game. From the drop of the puck, Hunter sensed that the Penguins knew their season was potentially on the line tonight, and boy, did they play like it. He loves how they came out after they got flattened in Newark on Tuesday and were rewarded with a goal in a dominant first period. Hunter analyzes how Kris Letang could full Marc-Andre Fleury with that shot before the Penguins got rewarded even more in the middle frame thanks to Rickard Rakell’s blast. Hunter looks at how it looked like an Alex Ovechkin goal from the left circle as he continues to be stellar for the Penguins. After that, Hunter praises Tristan Jarry for a good performance as the Penguins will need to rely on him in these final three games if they want to extend their playoff streak to 17 seasons. He then analyzes how strong of a game Brian Dumoulin had as he now has a new career-high in points and had a beautiful zone entry that led to a goal. Finally, he discusses why fans SHOULD want this team to get into the playoffs even if it would only be for a week or two. All that, plus much more is on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

  1. It's pretty simple, if this team ends up missing you can reference the below why:

October 17th – Penguins blow a 2-0 lead in the third period against Montreal and lose 3-2 in OT – 1 point lost there
November 1st – Penguins blow a 5-2 lead against The Bruins los 6-5 in OT – 1 point lost
November 2nd – Penguins blow a 3-1 third period lead against Buffalo lose 6-3 – 2 points lost
November 5th – Penguins give up a late goal to the Kraken lose -3-2 in regulation – potentially at least 1 point lost
November 12th – Penguins blow two third period leads against Montreal lose 5-4 in OT – 1 point lost
December 18th – Penguins give up a late goal in Carolina lose 3-2 – potentially 1 point lost
December 22nd – Penguins blow a late lead against Carolina lose 4-3 in OT – 1 point lost
December 28th – Penguins blow a 4-0 lead and lose 5-4 to Detroit in OT – 1 point lost
January 2nd – Penguins give up a late goal to The Bruins in the Winter Classic lose 2-1 in regulation – potentially 1 point lost
January 28th – Penguins give up a late goal to the Sharks and lose 6-4 in regulation – potentially at least 1 point lost
February 17th – Penguins blow a third period lead and lose to the NY Islanders 5-4 – 2 points lost
February 20th – Penguins blow a third period lead and lose to the NY Islanders 4-2 – 2 points lost
March 9th – Penguins blow a third period lead and lose to the NY Islanders 4-3 in OT – 1 point lost
March 16th – Penguins give up a late goal to the Rangers and lose 4-2 in regulation – potentially 1 point lost
March 20th – Penguins give up a late goal to the Ottawa Senators and lose 2-1 in regulation – potentially 1 point lost
March 28th – Penguins give up a late goal to the Red Wings and ultimately lose 7-4 in regulation – potentially 1 point lost
April 1st – Penguins give up a a late goal and lose to the Boston Bruins 4-3 in regulation – potentially 1 point lost

This is just the tip of the iceberg. This does not include the bad losses they had in regulation against teams they probably should have beaten and also the OT losses they had early in the season, when the team struggled mightily in 3 on 3 OT, before improving as the season went one. If you calculate the above, The Penguins left a potential 20 points on the table with those games mentioned above.

That my friends is the fine line between having a spot locked up already, to struggling to even make it. Those 20 points left on the table have them in the top three in the Metro right now.

  2. Alex Lyons is the guy the Penguins torched for 7 goals in late January when Kris Letang returned from injury and from his father passing and had the four points. That was the game where both Casey DeSmith I believe and Alex Lyons were the only goalies that each team had and they both had to share the E-BUG. The final in that game was like 7-6 in OT.

  3. FSG ultimately made the decision to bring the core back, but they also didn't bring them back to not make the playoffs. Im very confident, they know what is going on and what this team's problems are.

  4. Great podcast but my dude you gotta take something or see someone about that throat clearing it makes it a tough listen sometimes

  5. The only way I see the Pens move forward is that the Isles and Cats have to lose their remaining games, Detroit lose their remaining games, Sabres or Sens (mainly the Sabres) win the rest of their games.
