The San Jose Sharks have officially entered their rebuild. Discuss why Mike Grier needs to take it slow and steady and not to over-analyze every move because the Sharks are in their roster-churning phase. Then look at a pair of recent trades including acquiring Harvard captain, Henry Thrun, and why it’s worth the risk for the Sharks. Then try and make sense of the Mikey Eyssimont trade for Vladislav Namestnikov from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Finally, some of the expected moves from the Sharks heading into the trade deadline and why you shouldn’t be surprised if the Sharks add players.

I think rebuilds can be fun. I look forward to watching picks grow and develop. I've been a sharks fan for awhile, I remember being a bad team with a lot of heart.
Patience is the word sharks fans. Find enjoyment in watching this team build it’s new core. Watch players developer into trade assists turned into future. It’s been a joy to watch barracuda grow into there roles. We’re in the beginning of the rebuild.
I feel we honestly need to go pretty Arizona. We have a chunk of players we want/have to keep. We have one blue chip prospect (eklund) while a team like nj has at least 2+. We need to chip away replacing players with chances at future core/team. And hope to god our scouting is doing there job.
Essymont seemed like the prototypical forward MG wanted on the team. Why wouldn’t the Sharks just sign Thrun when he becomes a FA? Gave up a 3rd round pick? Some 4dimensional chess moves here. On the surface, very puzzling.
Great video. It’s going to be a rough couple of seasons, but it’s all about getting as many young assets into the organization and see how many we can fit around our top prospects to create a contender in a few years
it's like Grier helped TBL cap dump 500K for free.
just play out KL's contract. this is so absurd. he was on a 50-pts pace and 1/3rd of the 4th ranked F line in the league at the time he was benched. HC/GM tank his redemption tour and trade value by creating all that public drama when they prob could've moved out all of his cap hit if they'd just kept playing him. dinosaur mentality on full display.
Love the jersey JD!
Good observations about patience for Sharks fans during this period of adjustment. Sharks fans can always cheer for former Sharks players when their new teams go on playoff runs such as Carolina, New Jersey or Dallas for example. Burns, Meier and Pavelski were great players and we can still attach to their success in pursuit of a Stanley Cup.
Most of what Mike Grier is going to do will be experimental and trying out different team identities until he finds the right chemistry and role players to go with the stars. The value of any draft picks is questionable because although the top players (first rounders) often make the NHL and have long careers, most of the rest of drafted players never make it. There are many more undrafted, unnoticed, or otherwise missed players who could make it if given the right chance to develop NHL skills. Sharks need to update their scouting and development departments, more scouting of undrafted players, Russians, and other college players who don't get noticed because they are too small, late bloomers, or underestimated.
Trading for a partly developed 22 year old player who is more mature and closer to NHL skill level (or not just 18 years old and raw potential) makes sense. Also MG wants to develop more competition for jobs on the team. so that lazier or underperforming players can be worked around or better pressured by the coach. I think MG will also sign fewer 8 year contracts or try to keep the major commitments more flexible. Maybe some buy outs will also shake up the team when that window opens. Interesting to watch but the Sharks need to start making the playoffs sooner rather than later. Imagine how depressing it is for Brodie Brazil and all the other broadcasters who don't get to do playoff shows year after year, it sucks to never get in to the playoffs but it really shows how competitive the NHL 32 team league has become with a salary cap.
I remember Mike Grier playing for the Shark's, but I don't recall to much. The Shark's were a new team, and I was a fan, but I followed Pittsburgh more; until the Shark's started being more competitive.
Good Video JD. I think a lot of Sharks fans forget that we have to build a new core of younger players around our current pillars of Karlsson, Couture, Vlassic, and Hertl, since they're under contract for awhile. Grier made it very clear on day 1 he wants to grow and expand the prospect pool and make it competitive in each position. That's why his trade with the Devils made some sense as he wants to bring back more quantity in prospects and some picks. If he's able to flip Namestnikov into a pick, then he's doing a solid job as he turned a waiver pick up into a player who brings back some kind of draft capital to the Sharks but we will wait and see if that happens. You're spot on, Sharks fans shouldn't get too attached to some of the players as a lot more will be moved on from eventually.
Just off top of my head. Not enough care to look into this. But damn, how has Arizona not improved over a consistent time for this long. You’ve been majority a no factor in the league your entire existence. Yet have not been able to draft your way out of this hole. One of your best picks wasn’t made by your direct team in Doen. Just crazy, the consistency of not hitting.
Honestly I hope Arizona can pull something out of all this with all those picks. Logan’s at Least a start.
I really hope our scouting is ready to go.
My only issue with the Eyssimont trade was that we didn’t get a future back for taking on Namestnikov and giving up a younger player. If a 4/5th round pick would have been included, I would have been happier, but as you said, Eyssimont was a waiver pick-up. We’ll see what we get back for Namestnikov
Logan Stanley wants to be traded! I could see him being solid for the Sharks
Feels good to finally suck and not worry about being good. A new era for the Sharks for sure, Eklund and Bourdleau are our next Jumbo and Patty. I hope these boys can bring it home one day. Let the re-build begin!
