Imagine being the 5th seed in the West half way through the season, trading away a good scoring guard, your best wing defender, and an unprotected 1st round pick in 2029 for an indecisive enigma of a player on a 3 month contract… with the goal being to make a playoff push… just to finish the year 7-17 and intentionally lose your last chance at a play-in spot to try and save a top 10 protected pick that you STILL owe from a trade you made over 4 years ago for a player that you have NOTHING to show for on this current roster…

If you have a chance at a playoffs, however small, you don't quit, you keep trying. Period. Very weak by Mavs.
This is why European sports are better than Americans sports. The system American sports run don't give them a reason to win unless they can win it all. They need to add a religation system so that losing is dangerous and not so valuable. It is debatable that the team that loses in the finals had a worse season than the team that gets the first overall pick. Which team ends up benifiting more? The lottery team. It's a flaw in the system not the fault of the Mavs. It was a smart decision.

The best case scenario for the Mavs this off-season is to move up to the 2nd pick, and then trade that and salary filler for Mikal Bridges and Nick Claxton.
