The Best Team in NHL History

The Boston Bruins after their win against the Washington Capitals on Tuesday set the record for most points in an NHL season. I wanted to compare the 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens and the current iteration of the Boston Bruins. Who truly is the best team in NHL history? Let me know your thoughts down below!

  1. Whooooaaaa there. They're the team with the most wins and points in a season, but that still doesn't make them the best team in history.

  2. Nope. 1976-1977 Montreal Canadiens were better. NHL schedule then had only 80 games per season. Montreal had more points at 80 games than this Boston team. And Montreal had only 8 losses in 80 games. Boston has 12 losses. Close, but no dice Boston. Let's see if this team can match that great Montreal team and win the Cup.

  3. I don't think you can compare eras and at the same time believe most players can play in any era .. technically, I would argue the Bruins at best tied the Habs .. old record was for 80 games back in 76-77 .. Habs lost only eight and won a cup that year and again the following .. I hope Bruins can as well .. best regular season is now 82 games and under this new criteria there is no doubting the Bruins achievement .. no matter how you want to frame it .. both great teams .. I'm from Nova Scotia and both a Habs and a Marchand fan … win-win for me …

  4. This evaluation is meaningless. The past is not the present. It is gone. Every team over the last 45 years have had the same chance to best the Canadians record… that includes the Canadians themselves. The Bruins have done it. Nuff said. Worm-hole imaginings are pointless.

  5. Too hard to compare the two eras. Wouldn't that be a hell of a playoff series tho… 77 Habs vs 23 Bruins…

  6. You’re spot on. I think comparing players has to be done by measuring how dominant they were against their respective competition. The game, training, strategies etc evolving is not enough of a reason to say jake debrusk for example is better than gretz.

  7. Nobody's gonna give us our roses on this historic season and that's ok. The league is waaaaay deeper in talent and parody and we were able to do this. As a Bruins fan, to me this is THE GREATEST TEAM ever assembled (regular season) nothing anyone says will take away what these guys have accomplished

  8. Agreed. I don’t really think you can top the Habs, but these Bruins are special… I hope they can win the cup!

  9. Equipment has to be factored in as well. IMHO, it's impossible to compare modern day hockey with old school.
(I'm a diehard Bruins fan for 50+ years.)

  10. And the Canadians also had 132 points in 80 games took bruins 81 too pass them so when they both were at 80 the Canadians were ahead by a point so u got too give it too fhe Canadians and they won the cup we have too wait and see what Boston does in the playoffs but i wish them the best of luck

  11. I think the level of talent in todays NHL is so insane that any team could have gotten the record, they just need to be motivated enough. So many games this year where, stats wise, a team should have had a game in the bag, then the Coyotes beat them and surprise us all. The Bruins have been incredibly motivated this year and I think that all goes to the new coach, because the Bruins weren't doing this last year

  12. I can only say that the Bs , today, are the owners of some historical records in the NHL…Today there are about 12 teams that could win the Stanley Cup, that makes the records of the Bs have another dimension

  13. If they win the cup, no question. They lose? They are the 2007 patriots of hockey

  14. It's cool and all but that all goes away in [ what..? ] five days? It's an accomplishment but honestly; same vein as winning a game 200-1. They clinched their trip to hang out with Biden ages ago. Have fun with that. Congratulations on the best campaign ever! God knows when this achievement will be topped. Good luck in the Playoffs.

P.S. – Jack Edwards needs to start preparing something to say ahead of these huge moments. His rambling is really ruining whatever nice touch he's trying to put on these moments. Orlov leaving the Capitals had me paying attention to see what he gets up to in BOS. Jack Edwards was barely able to breathe as he babbled about " the man has some….Ovechkininnimmmmm…"

Lol. Jack, get it together. You're better than that!

  15. The bruins will be haunted by the Arizona game from December, because if they win, tomorrow night will be at 135 points which is eight point percentage of .8231 with that point they lost from the call that should’ve been disallowed because it should be an icy they’d be at .8293004 points percentage above the 7778 Habs

  16. I'm no Oilers fan but when Boston wins 4 Stanley cups in a row and scores over 400 goals a season them I'll think about it

  17. Boston would decimate them… Just how they treat their bodies train and most of all stamina.. A couple of high shots over Ken Dryden head Would have him 2nd guessing

  18. Well, in response to the best team in history, I was born in 82 so the 77 Canadiens were before my time so I don't know much about them but growing up I idolized teams like the Kings with Gretsky and Robitaille and Pittsburgh with Lemieux and Jagr. Those guys are legends, no doubt, but as far as the team as a whole, these Bruins have been the most fun for me to follow. You never know where the goals are gonna come from. The team chemistry is also great. They are entertaining to watch both on and off the ice. Great group of guys. I'm biased because I'm a Bruins fan but the numbers speak for themselves. I just keep thinking back to the Pat's perfect season where they lost the Super Bowl 😖. The Bruins are gonna have to get the Cup if they want the recognition as the best team in NHL history. My 2 cents. Go Bruins!

  19. there is no comparison. the skill level today is light years better then it was when the Habs set that record. this isn’t even close even if they don’t win the cup

  20. not saying todays guys arent tough, but back then, some of the goalies didnt even wear masks, the badass factor was off the charts

  21. Not a Boston fan myself. But… if my team had played a season as dominatingly brilliant as Bruins have… I would definitely call that team one of the best all time! In this era of very even teams such… domination is amazing! If I was a Bruins fan I would be so proud. Good luck with the playoffs, though. I agree that that’s were the real legends and stories are made👍🏻

  22. Goaltending was a joke back then when compared to today. Goalies have never been harder to score on

  23. They may have the most wins, but they are nowhere near the best team in NHL history. Ullmark got hurt last night, now they have their excuse to choke it up.

  24. Thank you so much for saying exactly what I want to yell at my radio whenever Felger and Mazz are on. I don't think I disagreed with a single thing you said. I've always told people that older players would be as good among other players in this generation as they were among other players in their generation if they were trained and coached with modern methods and I always thought that was just common sense but so many people don't get it. Also goaltender pads are much bigger and lighter now than they were in the 1970s which also contributes to modern goaltenders looking better than older ones. I also noticed what you mentioned about how the Canadiens would not have had the cap space for nine hall of famers with a modern salary cap unless they took extremely team friendly deals (which I doubt they would). I don't mind comparing individual players from different eras but comparing teams from different eras is almost impossible. I really don't know why so many people feel the need to decide whether the current Bruins team or the late 1970s Canadiens team was better.

And man that Gerry Cheevers save at 0:38. Who needs to tie up the puck when you can just tell it to get the hell out of here. I wish that wasn't a 2 minute penalty nowadays.

  25. It's an amazing thing with what a surprise it is. I'm a caps fan and it reminds me of watching them in their stanley cup run. every caps fan thought they were the worst team in recent years and figured they wouldn't make it far, but I learned a lot watching them in the playoffs and win the cup and made me realize that team chemistry is the most important thing. When the chemistry is there, every player is raised to their highest potential which is what I think is happening with this bruins team.

  26. This team beats the habs team. 100% , almost 50% more teams and no salary cap, along with the fact every single person in the league these days is just so much more knowledgeable and skilled then back in the 70s

  27. What makes this team the best ever, much of it doesn't show in stats or even visible to the eye, it's the chemistry, the unselfish teammates, guys who lift guys up when they see a teammate down or troubled, it's in the players themselves, on top of incredible playmaking, scoring, goaltending and great coaching.

  28. Considering there were was no overtime or shootout point the 76' Canadiens were by far the better team statistically. Not to mention the bruins needed 81 games to exceed 132 points where the 76' Canadiens achieved 132 in 80 games played. Not to mention the 76' Canadiens had 60 regulation wins eclipsing the bruins this season. While still impressive and I love to see the record they are a head and shoulders below the 76' Canadiens
