What does Akito Hirose’s readiness mean for the future of the Canucks’ blueline?

Still think we should go for Gavrikov in FA, I wouldn’t want to throw Hirose to the wolves just yet.

I feel like the team is gonna go hard on high flying D men and just try to outscore the opponents

so far Akito has been good. Triple H – Hughes, Hronek and Hirose..and then what? OEL like it or not. Meyers haters can’t wait for his departure. Wonder if Tocchet thinks otherwise ? Hopefully we get a pleasant surprise. Flip J., Jet Woo…We have some decent 6, 7 guys.

Everyone can see Myers isn’t good, even Tochet

It means he should probably start the year in Abbotsford and compete to be the 1st callup.

Gavrikov is mediocre and would just be another overpaid bad player. In other words, Myers revisited.

I think Hirose has shown well in his limited time and he will have every chance to complete for a spot on the Canucks roster or be a top 4 defender in Abby. I think FO has to try to add talent and good defensemen to the roster so I think you have to add pieces you think are ahead of Hirose and then have Hirose develop properly and eventually push those other defenders for roster spots and ice time as Hirose develops

For me this always brings up the argument of if a player develops more in the NHL playing less minutes and in less situations. Hirose looks good, likely plays somewhere between 15-17 minutes a night. Mostly ES. In the AHL he’s probably playing 21-23 minutes a night in all situations.

Personally, I say spend some time in the AHL. Develop. Be over ripe like Detroit used to do it. Then come up, there’s no rush.

If Jeff Cowan can score 6 goals in 4 games, anything is possible. Too small of a sample to say anything. Be prepared to give him a genuine chance to make the team in training camp, but don’t make that your *plan*.

He’s been good in garbage time games. There might be something there but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

I’ve been a fan of this team long enough that there have been a lot of young guys that have initially impressed, and then faded hard.

He’s a free acquisition, and he shows potential. But, people penciling him into the top 4 are getting way ahead of themselves.

I’m hopeful with the kid because one of the traits he seems to possess is a great head on his shoulders, but we need to be realistic with our expectations.
