  1. Personally I tend to lean toward burning the year. Ed looks like he’ll be a nhl d man and getting to his next contract a year earlier could be extremely beneficial. Also next year if kasper and mazur make the team or another rookie all those deals would be up for extensions at the same time.

Obviously we won’t know if this was the right move or not until two seasons from now but I thought it was an interesting read and can explain the benefits to burning a year to those against it. Like I said we won’t know if it was the right move or not for two seasons but hopefully the wings end up having to pay him big money because that would mean he is playing at a high level.

Interesting argument by Sean, but I don’t think he’s right at all. Firstly, there’s no guarantee burning a year will for sure get a more team-friendly deal: that’s a big gamble, and I’d bet we’ll have a good idea of who Ed will be by next November anyway.

Secondly, he’ll only be RFA after this runs out, so its not like he has all the negotiating power.

Third and most important, that extra year of an ELC is massive. That could easily be a 6-7 million cap cushion: just one year, sure, but nothing to throw away.
