  1. For me, Gretzky and Lemieux flip back and forth as the best. 1 day it is Wayne and the next it is Mario. It depends on what videos or news comes up about them that brings that thought to mind. And I did see the full careers of both of them. It's a shame Mario had back problems plus having to overcome Hodgkins Disease. My favorite player Mike Bossy also had back problems that caused an early retirement else his name might be in conversations about who was best.

  2. You're awesome bud. I agree it's difficult to rate players across time. But I have no problem with your assessment. My list would include Lidstrom. GLG!

  3. Given Wayne's records and his acknowledgement of Gordie as the GOAT, I'd be hard pressed to argue against him.

  4. Crosby isn't even the greatest Penguin ever so he can't be the GOAT. Super Mario holds both positions.

  5. It's not as severe as with Lemieux, but it's s shame Crosby was cut down in the prime of his career like he was. He probably would be in the 1,700-ish point range already if not for Dave Steckel.

And that always annoys me when anyone has the audacity to suggest the NHL favors Crosby. People often forget, Steckel didn't just give Crosby a severe concussion; Crosby had a cracked vertebrae in his neck. So Steckel hit Crosby with a blindside hit. The hit targeted the head. It was a away from the puck. What happened to Steckel? Nothing. The NHL did nothing.

Say anyone who says the league favors Crosby… you don't know what your watching. The only person the NHL has ever favored is whatever fringe, curtain-jerker loser–who couldn't find the back of the net on a map–happens to be playing that day. I wish the NHL did favor its stars like any other league do. But the NHL has always done the opposite.

  6. i could never love any other sports team in the world the way i love this pittsburgh penguins era

  7. For as good as Crosby was its hard to put him above Orr (best defenceman) and Howe (Mr Hockey). Seems like recency bias to me. 5th all time is still incredible putting him above Messier and others.

  8. I think the best way to compare eras is by how dominate they were in their era. Gretzky would blow others away in points, compared to Crosby/Ovi. Kinda how McDavid is now, nobody even close to him in points.

  9. Yzerman should have been on that list for sure. Also 3 cups, more goals, more assists, Conn Smythe, considered (one of) the all time greatest leaders. Like Rosby for Pittburgh brought Detroit back to life from nothing.
To put Crosby 3rd all time is therefore way to high in my opinion.
I understand the love for the guy and he is an amazing generational player but so far there are others way more deserving of that spot. I do say 'so far' because he isn't done yet.
I love Ovi but he has no reason being here imo. the best pure goalscorer of all time? yes! Best overall player of all time? No way

  10. I've been watching hockey since 2001, so I missed Gretzky's whole career and only saw the tail end of Lemieux's.

I think in terms of pure talent, I've never seen anything like McDavid. He's the only player I've seen who's impact on the game is comparable to what I've seen from old highlight reels of Lemieux. Both of them consistently make other elite athletes look a step behind.

The only two players that compare to McDavid that I've seen are Crosby and Ovechkin. I would probably rank them with McDavid at the top, followed by Crosby and Ovechkin. But you could really seriously make an argument for any of them.

What's amazing about Crosby uniquely is that he dominates the game from the dirty areas. Crosby has a huge lower body, and it's probably his biggest physical advantage. Because of this, he's at his best when he's fighting for a puck in the corner or playing in front of the net. This is very unlike most star players.

He takes a lot of contact by playing this way, and it may be why he's been hurt so much. But I think it's also why he is so endearing to his teammates. Crosby plays REALLY hard, and his effort is as inspiring to his teammates as his skill.

  11. I know the "what if" points get stale – but it is interesting to think about where Crosby would be if he didn't miss those 150ish games in the exact prime of his career with concussion issues.

  12. The Greatest of All Time?
    Bobby Orr.
Now, what exactly does TGOAT mean?
    Everything!
Goals, Assists, Physical when necessary, Off I e Community Service and accommodating to fans.
    The list goes on…
But, this is only the qualification list.
So, if everyone from Maurice Richard to Sidney Crosby can “Tick” these boxes, then move to the total points, etc, per games played.
Again, most NHL Players on this list have substantial stats. Now what?
    ???
    What about Character? Integrity?
How many others on the GOAT List did it with only one knee?
    GOAT?
    Bobby Orr.
