GAME RECAP: Penguins at Blue Jackets (04.13.23) | Last Game of 2022.23 Season

The Penguins conclude the 2022.23 campaign as they head to Columbus to take on the Blue Jackets. The Penguins open up the scoring on a power play in the opening five minutes with a goal from Kris Letang. The Blue Jackets, Andrew Peeke, tied the game at 1-1 with 17:48 left in the 2nd period. The Penguins take a 2-1 lead just under four minutes into the final frame on their second power play goal of the night, this one coming from Jake Guentzel. Guentzel now leads the Penguins with 36 goals in 78 games this season. With 3:25 remaining in regulation, Emil Bemstrom found the back of the net to even the score, and the game goes into overtime. Johnny Gaudreau wins it in overtime for the Blue Jackets, and that’s a wrap on the Penguins 2022.23 season.

  1. Definitely not the end I was hoping for. From a hot start in October to a 7 game slide, from a 5 game streak to a 7 game streak, then a 6 game loss streak to inconsistent alternation, losing to the Sharks but topping the Avalanche. Then a 4 game slip, then a hot 4 game streak, then another 4 game loss streak to where we'd alternate. Perfect example of just how inconsistent the Penguins were this season. Crosby and Malkin pushed hard for a 17th consecutive but the rest of our team wasn't driven enough.

In my opinion Burke and Hextall's firing would be best for this team. Sullivan was a good coach, and I believe he can change, but similar play to our cup runs in 2016 and 17 to now won't work, our team is just too slow. I'd say drop Carter, Granlund (unless its just rough for him to come to a new team, which I somewhat doubt), probably Heinen, Dumoulin (not too sure after his last few) and maybe trade out some of our older defenseman for some younger ones, maybe Ty Smith, but I haven't seen enough of Smith to create a solid opinion.

Likely get a new goaltender or get the situation sorted. Jarry is usually alright, but his proneness to injury causes him to miss alot of games and become inconsistent in the net. DeSmith I'd say is mostly only great when he plays a one off game to rest the other goaltender. Perhaps John Gibson, or maybe the goaltender we signed to an ATO Joel Blomqvist (seeing as how he is only 21, Im kind of shaky on him)

For the Cup, I believe Boston is likely to win, but I'd also like to see:

    – Wild (haven't won a cup since its debut)
    – Golden Knights (my go to team when the Penguins fall short in or of the playoffs
    – Devils (I believe they've had enough time rotting at the bottom of the league)
    – Kraken (it'd be cool seeing a young team win it)
    – Oilers (?) (Just want see McDavid win what he deserves for his effort)
    – Maple Leafs (as much as I want them to break through, the curse will likely stop them)

  2. That game was a perfect example of the season . No Defense , No PP , No win in regulation . Can't even beat basement teams . When do the firings begin and who's first ?

  3. Nothing unexpected happened. This game was their season in a nut shell. Columbus DIDN'T even want to win this game. Columbus sat down half their team. So they would have a better chance in the lottery. Pens=Cluster F**K! From management, coaches, down to the players. It's not that they lose, it HOW they lose.

  4. Welp, see you next season boys. Yinz fought hard this year despite not making the playoffs. I’ll always and forever be a diehard fan of this team and bleed black and gold 🖤💛

  5. Until we address THE elephant in the room – inconsistent goal-tending and lazy defense – this will be the story of the Penguins post-Fleury.

  6. And even with all that if the penguins had just held onto their 3-1 3rd period lead on the Islanders they would be in the playoffs.

  7. This is the perfect example of this season we didn’t make the playoffs because we couldn’t beat these teams that have a losing record and and at the bottom of the league

  8. Aging team…. Bad goaltending…. Weak blue line…. Would’ve equaled another 1st round exit. Crosby and Malkin have 1 more Cup run left in them but they need a solid team around them to do it.

  9. I still love my Pens.
    🤷‍♂️
I've seen 5 Stanley Cups in my life, endless world class talents, etc.

You can't really "rebuild" with Crosby, Malkin, and Letang all with NMC contracts.
So.. move on from Hextall and Burke, retool as best as possible, and they could be a playoff team again next year.
I don't see a real path to a Cup any time soon though..

  10. The playoff streak produced a ton of great memories that I will always cherish. Thank you guys for 16 incredible years in a row and 3 championships along the way. 🐧❤️

  11. first time in my life you guys won’t be in the playoffs. thanks for the memories and cups, and may next year bring more luck!!

  12. Mike Sullivan's successes appear to be more the result of GM Jim Rutherfords skill than Sully's. Hopefully, ownership will recognize and correct the Hextall mistake and the mistake of resigning Sullivan and dump them as well as Jarry, Carter, Grandlund, Petry.

  13. The inconsistencys of the season summed up in the last two games how the mighty have fallen hoping for one more cup run for Crosby Malkin and Letang let's get it next season

  14. Highs and lows. Fans have been treated to greatness. Should not have ended this way, though. Not while having a healthy Crosby. Family time for the players, hopefully lots of planning ahead from the org. on scouting and analytics, coaching, GM and Hockey Ops., everything, to get into a competitive position especially as the East got tougher.

  15. Enjoy your summer fellow penguin fans And I’ll see y’all next season let’s go penguins

  16. “Didnt play the right way” “thanks for the memories” cant score 5/5, cant defend consistently, average goalies, how does this all happen? Mismanagement of a roster & holding onto the past, hextall is terrible, they ran him out of philly, bottom 6 forwards, 1600+ mins played, 48 goals for, 79 against, incredible numbers, should probably trade for or sign older & slower players again at the deadline, or maybe bring back bust draft picks so they can resurrect their carrier, good teams remain relevant…….but we will move forward & nothing will change & the final years of crosby will be waisted

  17. A microcosm of the entire season. Lack of 60min team effort. No intimidation factors. Zero urgency, zero-impact acquisitions, irresponsible puck handling, and a bowl of pudding has more grit than this team. Did I miss anything? I'm glad that this bunch won't have the opportunity to be humiliated in the 1st round. Here's to next year!

  18. I will cherish this 16 year playoff streak for the rest of my life. Thank you guys for 16 incredible years in a row with 3 cups. I am proud to be born in Pennsylvania and be apart of Penguins nation. See y'all next season! 🖤💛

  19. Pens needed to blow just one more 3rd period lead before their season ended and finish with a ridiculously bad OT performance. Thank God this season is over. Not sure I could stand to watch any more brain farts on ice.

  20. We need to keep Jake, Zucker, Racks, Archibald, Poehling, DeSmith, and our usual big 3. Everyone else can go.
