Until the big guys in Toronto perform big in the playoffs, nothing will happen. The Oil went to the conference finals last year and look at the way Connor and Leon (playing hurt) performed.
The Leafs are traumatized. And suffer pstd. This is hard to over come.
Some thoughts.
Keefe can give Matthews a lot of different looks. Except this isn't what he does. He blindly and stupidly runs Matthews and Marner out against other teams shutdown players and then talks about how they need to do more in press conferences. Keefe has never once owned his role in the team's failures.
Matthews has looked great the last six weeks. Or you could say, Matthews has looked great now that he is playing with Marner again. Is Matthews really one of the best in the league or is he an 11 million dollar Stutzle whose numbers are inflated by Marner?
If they set a new record for failure in the first round there will be changes. There should have been changes when Ducharme outcoached Keefe. Instead Shanahan came out and said that someday Keefe would be an NHL coach. There should have been changes when Nylander was too gutless to go in the corner to get a loose puck that was just sitting there. There weren't.
Dubas has brought in what the team needs. The flip side of that is he never brought in what they needed until his job was on the line. Instead he chased his delusions about fast undersized players. Now that his job is on the line he suddenly does what needs to be done. Which reminds me, Dubas has never owned his role in the team's failures either. There seems to be a real lack of accountability with Mutt and Jeff.
Will they do it this time? I really what to hope they do, but Dubas has reduced the opportunities for this core to a single chance with a proper team and a bad coach. It makes you wonder where they would be if they had a GM who didn't think he was still a player agent and a really good NHL coach.

I think that the X-Factor in this series will be Vasilevsky. His numbers are only slightly worse than 2021-2022, but I noticed in the highlights that he wasn't the superhuman goalie that I'm used to seeing.
The Leafs' goaltending has improved a great deal since the 2022 playoffs, too.
Leafs are the healthiest team in this round – best chance they've ever had. I still won't believe it until they've done it!
I can't believe Tampa Bay will get another free pass into the second round, how lucky can someone get?
Even if the Leafs are up 3-0 in the series the refs will carry Tampa back into the series, and I’m an Oilers fan who despises the Leafs.
I'm hoping Matthew's has just been saving himself for playoffs?! 60 goals and first round exit, so I'm hoping he's just figured that extra motivation and hustle is better conserved when needed most playoff time!!!
