This one is very close. I think with the Canes scoring problems on top of the Isles' strong defense & Sorokin's ridiculous goaltending that the Islanders win in 6.

I have selected the Hurricanes to win this in 6 games! I’d not be disappointed if the Islanders won, but CAR in 6 games!
When Barzal was with Horvat the two combined for 12 points (five goals, seven assists) in the seven games they played together, and New York's power play was 6-for-19 (31.6 percent) in those seven games. So if that warms up Hurricanes could be in trouble.

No one is looking at the season series, Sorokin was in net for every game against Carolina. Check the score totals out.
Carolina is a team that has always seemed to give the Islanders fits going back 5 or 6 years, so stylistically there must be something going on there. I think the difference though will come down to special teams. The Islanders powerplay has been horrendous all season, and a total momentum killer. If you can't punish the Hurricanes at least a couple times on the PP, you won't be able to pad your offense with that extra goal here and there that the Islanders so desperately need. I do think it's possible this series could go 7 games without the Islanders scoring a single PP goal. People will argue that Barzal/Horvat had the Islanders powerplay back from the dead in that brief window they played together, but for me that is too small a sample size to go off of, and unfortunately Horvat has not shown much on the PP since. I am going to go Canes in 6, but almost every time I have bet against the Islanders the past few years it has come back to haunt me, so we will see.

I think the Canes’ question mark in net put them at a bigger disadvantage when staring down Sorokin. Even if Ilya goes down, they have Varlamov to fall back on. This is my biggest upset pick for the first round. Isles in 7

Canes are gonna win. Although I love the Islanders, I always believe in matchups, and Carolina is a TERRIBLE matchup against the Isles. I know it’s been a couple of years since but Isles got sweeped last time they played the Canes in the playoffs. I don’t think they’ll get sweeped again but I do think hurricanes will win 😢

Isles fan but I think Canes take this series due to home ice match-up. Isles soft spot is the bottom pairing with Romanov out. Canes will get the match ups they wants against Dobson and Bolduc.
Two quick comments – 1. This is the Cane's 5th straight playoff appearance, not 6th (but I expect they'll still meet that record in a couple seasons). 2. Pretty confident Rod is going to play Raanta game one. He's been noticeably better than Freddy lately and his home record is absurd this year. Andersen hasn't done enough recently to give anyone a lot of confidence.

Islander fan and my gut says carolina takes it. The isles have been playing playoff hockey for over a month now, squeaked into the playoffs, and you routinely do not know which team will show up. They blow out the top dogs and lose to lottery teams. I feel like that inconsistency won’t fly in the playoffs. I’m still holding out hope that horvat and parise WANT it bad and sorokin steals some games.

Definitely islanders. This may be a hot pick but I dont think it will be close. Not meaning the individual games won't be close but I absolutely think the isles could finish them in 5…maybe 6 if the canes get a lucky bounce. You will soon see why I think this. I wouldn't even be surprised if the isles sweep. The only way I see the canes winning is if they get a lot of puck luck and win it in seven…anything less than seven games will be an isles victory
