Pete Sampras had already had one tough five set match at the 1997 Australian Open (beating Hrbaty having been a break down in the fifth set). In the quarter finals Sampras faced future French Open champion Albert Costa. It was another five set thriller and Peter Sampras again showed his champion’s ability to raise his game when he most needed to.
