Recently I downloaded seismic data from a station named “BORG” for actual research purposes, which gave me a less-work-related idea. Presenting the Kraken Global Seismographic Network (made from all real stations!)

I can count this as practice making maps with PyGMT, right?
Anyway, I put this together by searching for different station names that were similar to player names/nicknames on the IRIS MetaData Aggregator website (IRIS is a seismology research consortium that makes nearly all seismic data from around the world publicly available, in many cases in real-time!): https://www.ds.iris.edu/mda/
Some of these stations are currently active permanent installations, and others were active at some point in the past for a temporary deployment (e.g., for particular studies or experiments). Station codes are often assigned based on the area that they’re located in. For example, WENY was located near the village of Mwenewenya, Malawi. MCCN1 and DAC are like one valley apart from each other in California, so that’s why the labels are together – the triangles totally overlap at this scale.
Here are all of the stations and the players I assigned them to in case any of them aren’t obvious enough lol, and the station pages!
Honorable mention to other stations I thought about using: IAM40 or CAN for McCann, ADAM for…Adam Larsson lol, VINC or DNR for Dunn, PASS for Wennberg (🤭), OGEE for Geekie, EBR for Eberle
