The #Flames and Brad Treliving have mutually agreed to part ways. Don Maloney has been promoted to President of Hockey Operations and will also hold the position of Interim General Manager.

Terrible news. Best drafting GM we’ve ever had. Little else out there to be excited about.

Everyone will point to the lack of success, trades that never happened and some questionable signings on July 1.

But BT was phenomenal at getting RFAs signed and he had to deal with some SHIT as GM here from the Peters saga to the shit show that was last offseason. He’s by far the best GM we’ve had in the last 20 years and those are going to be big shoes to fill.

I will always respect him going to bat for the city at the press conference after Gaudreau and Tkachuk left.

  3. AbsoluteIKeatI

I hope this isn’t because Sutter is in charge now

  4. hennyl0rd

The grip sutter has on this organization is insane

  5. Turbo1518

I am so freaking nervous about who comes next…

BT was the first gm the Flames have had in my lifetime that wasn’t just outright terrible.

    Many nervous days to come..

I’m upset for the Flames. GMBT did amazing with a shit sandwich of last off season. He got Huby and Weegar AND signed them long term. That move alone should really have all fans realizing the leadership they had for a minute.

    Sorry Flames fans

I don’t like this. I thought Tre did well, honestly.

  8. flyin_italian

After all the dust settled on last season, Treliving was one of the few people who I thought didn’t suck.

    Hold on to ya butts.

  9. yeastneast

Regardless of your thoughts on Tre, Buckle Up for whoever you think will replace him.

  10. ruralrouteOne

This sucks. We need him more than he needs us.

I don’t hate Sutter, but after last season it will be brutal if we don’t make a coaching change as well.

  11. Brodstar18

That’s really to bad BT was good in my books, also have been a fan of Sutter but this year was extremely confusing and clearly lost the room. I thinks that’s the real issue within the club.

Hopefully there’s a decent GM available and Iggy comes in as HC!! Lol

  12. moth_hockey2

Betcha BT stood on the hill of rebuild/retool or bust and was denied

Watch us resign all the veterans now, keep Sutter, and go for more overpaid UFAs

  13. ActionKestrel

I hate cheering for this team. Every decision is emotional and reactionary. There never seems to be a plan.

  14. bbraz761

I don’t understand this unless it was more Brad’s decision. Who else out there do we feel is better than Brad? Despite the outcome this year I really liked his moves for what he was given to deal with. Maybe Brad didn’t like working with Sutter.

  15. BadMeatSweats

I doubt BT will be out of work for very long. There will be a lot of interest in him around the league.

  16. FinkBass420

Well, this is right up there with the Iginla trade and the day Johnny left for top shittiest days as a flames fan.

  17. SrPhillipOliverHoles

This is a fucking head scratcher. Why wouldn’t they can Sutter and run it back for one more year? Tre put together one of the most remarkable GM off seasons in recent memory, but the coach couldn’t galvanize the team.

  18. Exciting-Island-7355

I think this probably signals that a rebuild. I can’t imagine that any new GM would want to take over this team without being able to tear it down and start fresh.

Unless ownership is being idiotic, which wouldn’t surprise me

  19. BeautifulAwareness81

Might be an unpopular opinion but he is still the one who constructed the teams. Regardless of his drafting, the rosters put together have been pretty average. I think this is the right decision and it’s time to part ways.

  20. MarkMyNutts

I don’t think the roster construction was the problem but I guess we’ll see what happens

  21. gamblewizard98

Hoping we hire dubas after the leafs lose in the first round. We need a total new perspective on this organization.

But we’ll probably hire Brad pascal as a sutter puppet lmao

  22. Master-Defenestrator

I have hope that there will continuity if they promote Craig Conroy into the position. Hopefully that way we don’t go back to the dark ages of Flames GMs.

He was certainly the best GM in my lifetime (low bar) and I hope Tre can go on to an organization that will actually let him rebuild and draft his own core.

  23. Skinkybob

I guarantee you this is as much about Treliving wanting to move on as it is about anything else. Flames supposedly offered him an extension at the same time they extended Sutter and Tre turned it down. Imagine working your ass off for 9 years while your bosses consistently make it more difficult for you to do your job. Can’t blame him for wanting to see what it’s like elsewhere.

  24. ArnieAndTheWaves

Basically the last thing I wanted to happen to the team. Say what you want about Huby’s performance this season, there was absolutely no better play than what BT did last summer for the team. He mostly put the team in the best position to win and Huby’s production taking a nosedive and Markstrom going from Vezina candidate to mediocre in a one-year span is well outside his control.

  25. Beta1224

I don’t understand all the love Tre is getting here, he had every opportunity to get Jonny and Tkachuk on long term contracts, but didn’t, and then he tried to save face by signing older players to long term contracts which currently look like they are franchise crippling. Treliving deserves as much hate as Sutter is getting
