THEMOVE: 2023 Amstel Gold Race

Lance, George, Johan, and JB are back to recap this year’s Amstel Gold Race. They discuss the dominance of Tadej Pogačar, the absent presence of Jumbo-Visma, Ben Healy’s attack against Tom Pidcock to secure second, and the bizarre situation that took place with the race director’s car.

  1. Great podcast guys, a new subscriber here, nice to listen to some greats of this sports just chatting about bike races

  2. So…what’s with Lance throwing Team EF under the bus? Why talk crap about them like that? Not cool.
Is it just because of his personal beef with Vaughters?

  3. Pogacar is just too strong at this time😊 of the year.. Summer weather in France will show him a completely different scenario .

  4. 30:50 After Armstrong "I don't care about all those great classics… only if Pogacar wins more than 5 Tours de France, he can be considered the greatest" (or something like that)… Bruyneel remains silent, but his face & head movement speak volumes. Armstrong is still completely and solely Tour de France focused, which may be considered normal in his country, but in quite a few European countries, cycling lovers and followers think differently. Yes, the Tour de France is the greatest race of the season (and for good reason!), but trust me: if a cyclist wins f.i. 3 Tours, 2 Giri, 2 Vueltas, and 4 or 5 Monuments… he will be considered much greater than a cyclist who 'only' wins 6 or 7 Tours, without any Monument Classic. Except in the USA, I guess.

  5. Good point Johan, Jumbo is afraid of the psychological collapse of their best riders if they were beaten again and again by Pogačar before TDF, they don't want a confrontation. I really wonder if WVA will fly again as RedBull at TDF, so far he hasn't shown anything yet. I don't know in what condition is Roglič now, but he should be here, Remco will challenge Pog in LBL, he should challenge him in this race with his pursuit and explosive sprint tactics, this is how the warrior spirit is strengthened, not by avoiding confrontation!

Pog plan is to win all three Ardennes classics, can we really call him the new cannibal or is just wining ecstasy that he experience, because the difference is huge, the cannibal wants to eat his rivals, Pog shakes hands, drinks a beer, chats with his rivals, it is completely different state of mind than cannibals have. I hope he won't make a mistake and go racing at the Tour of Slovenia and will rather take a rest, he's only human after all😉

  6. 30:17 on the goats: It's something you see American cyclist say so much that it's all about TDF, even Chris Horner said last year that WVA has accomplished more in his road cycling carreer then Tom Boonen ever did. WVA won some 9 TDF stages and the green jersey and 1 monument. Boonen won 6 TDF stages + green jersey, 7 monuments + world champion. Yet still because Wout had 1 amazingly dominant Tour that would outperform all these "classicy things like 4 Paris Roubaix I don't care about". Really disrespectful.

  7. Lance, you should be more supportive of EF Cycling, I know you have some beef with Vaughters, but come on man, this is a US based team, in your home state, we should all be extremely supportive this team!

  8. With regards to the time gaps on screen they were all over the place, much more so than even the cobbled races so by the end of the race when they were swinging 10 seconds this way and that I’d lost any faith in them

  9. I switched off my TV, when I saw them dragging the czar to the line. First by a moto-bike pretending to shoot photos, when Pidcock and Healy teamed up. I've been at many rock-concerts, where the photograpers need to leave the restricted area in front of the stage after song 2 or 3. But I was completely pissed off, when they did the same with a car, just as Healy was reducing his backlog from 32 sec. to 18 sec. I don't think, Healy would have had a serious chance in a one-on-one sprint with Pogacar, but who knows, with a little bit of encouragement after closing the gap, anybody would have been curious about the outcome. Unlike Pidcock and Czar, healy rode the last climbs quite evenly and when he closed the gap to Pidcock and left him alone later, he seemed to be on a mission…

  10. Think it would be GREAT for the "Move" to have Alejandro Valverde as guest during coverage on both Fleche and LBL. Think Johan can talk him into making an appearance. Looking forward to it. Ciao

  11. Lance kicked arse in the Worlds back in the day. He beat the best riders in the world and only the punck Greg Lamond did it better. Only two Americans to win the Worlds!!

  12. Healy is as Irish as Dan Martin. Born in England, couldn't get on the national squad and because his grandparents mothers cousin was Irish he got a spot on the Irish team.

  13. Yes Lance dominance can be boring. Like the biggest tour favorite, passing the other big favorite in the opening time trail can lead to boring racing. 😉

  14. There are 30+ categorised climbs whit of course some doubles and triples but there are still at least 5 to 10 that are not named that break riders too. There is no flat spot in the whole final.

  15. If the Amstel was not at the spot it is at the moment between cobbled classics and the Ardennes it probably would have more priority for Jumbo Visma.

  16. "Revisiting" is political-talk for we will not change anything for this year, but next year will be different, but we will not tell you anything till then.

  17. I wonder what EF Directuer Sportif Tejay van Garderen thinks about being called a second tier team by the WEDU media outlet? JB in Austin, is this really the direction you want your show to go?

  18. Pogacar, while an absolute stud, is making racing boring. He has to be on something to be able to ride like that…

  19. One week races so far :

    UAE = Evenepoel
    Paris-Nice = Pogacar
    Tirreno Adiratico = Roglic = JUMBO-VISMA
    Catalunya = Roglic = JUMBO-VISMA
    Basque Country = Vingegaard = JUMBO-VISMA

One day UCI Classiscs so far :

Omloop het Nieuwsblad = van Baarle = JUMBO-VISMA
    Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne = Benoot = JUMBO-VISMA
    Strade Bianche = Pidcock
Milan-San Remo = van der Poel
    Bruuge-De Panne = Philipsen
    E3 Saxo Classic = van Aert = JUMBO-VISMA
    Gent-Wevelgem = Laporte = JUMBO-VISMA
    Dwars door Vlaanderen = Laporte = JUMBO-VISMA
    Tour of Flanders = Pogacar
    Paris-Roubaix = van der Poel
    Amstel Gold Race = Pogacar

I don't think that you have to worry about Jumbo-Visma Johan, they won three out of the five biggest stage races so far this season, and won five out of the eleven classics. No team can say the same.

It was only because of bas luck that van Aert didn't win Roubaix, because that is the only true remark. Yes they didn't win a Monument with Flanders or Roubaix (Which has been their only goal so far this season with Wout van Aert.).

And they really don't give a damn about the Amstel Gold Race, not even as a Dutch team, like you guys mentioned they have other (bigger) goals. If the Amstel would have been a goal they would have let Roglic come down from his mountain. (El Teide) Or van Aert would have taken his holiday one week later. 😉✌

  20. It was Dirk De Wolf who made the claims about Colnago, not Boonen. The latter actually made an Instagram statement where he explains his love for Colnago. On the other hand, Jasper Philipsen recently said in an interview that he dislikes Colnago for not having an aero frame which is quite important for a sprinter.
