  1. Hughes and Hronek, Canucks, quit crying, but thanks for the draft picks.Really wish it was the Canucks first round pick not the Islanders, but whatever works 🙂

  2. This is the retool path, I don't want it, but they said they wanted a center and a D for Horvat and that's what they got (well, also for a 2nd round pick). This is exactly what the management team said they were going to do. I don't want it, but don't act surprised.

  3. Hronek is a fine pick-up. He should help strengthen that right side of the D.

But why a 2023 1st AND 2nd? I know the Islanders 1st is conditional (a good chance they miss out of the POs and use it this Spring, thus making the pick a 2024 1st), but I don't know how to feel since the Canucks are in a bad spot where they kind of need everything atm.

The prospect pool isn't great, the big club is a mishmash of good – poor. And while I understand they want to make moves in order to insulate Petey, Kuz, Hughes, Demko, they are still potentially 2-5 years from even having a sniff at the playoffs (and that could be a generous time frame depending on who you ask).

So does this trade really move the needle that much? Enough so that it means giving up 2 good draft picks for a 25 year old R side Dman on a seriously flawed roster, with little to no help coming up the ranks?

Raty & Kravtsov were good returns, and low risk – high reward types. I think if they were really THAT good, they would've somewhat been showing more signs of living up to hype. But I suppose one of them could be a Nichuskin-type (spelling?), where a new environment helps them meet more of their potential. But still… it's a lot of question marks.

And sadly, that seems to be the Canucks entire Org right now.

They have run out of good faith given their refusal to properly rebuild and cut corners.

I'd like to see them recoup one of those lost picks in another trade, but I'm not convinced they will.

It's all just so messy, from top to bottom.

  4. Bertuzzi traded to Boston for a 2024 protected first-round pick and 2025 fourth-round selection i figured we would get a caliber player in return. Reason I guess for a 2024 1st pick is in case Boston reaches finals and they will have a high pick first rounder.

  5. I, never like giving up Draft capital and I am a big believer of building through the draft. However, Hronek is underrated and can be a stud alongside a guy like Hughes. Or can be a nice 2nd pair guy to go out there.
He is also still young but can help mentor and help push the Canucks into a playoff team… next year. I don't think this year he will make the difference that the Canucks 1st won't still be valuable. And losing The Islanders 1st stings. You probably wouldn't draft a better defenceman than Hronek this year.
    Use this year's 1st on a forward.

  6. Hronek, Beauvillier, Raty, and whatever other picks for Horvat. It’s not so horrible when you look at it that way.

  7. Hronek just entering his prime, it's not like the Canucks got a bad deal here… Was shocked and sad to see him go. Only time will tell if the Wings actually won this trade, but at the moment a pretty fair deal for both teams.

  8. I'm good with this trade. Hronek is proven on a bad team + upside. I really don't like giving up a 1st, which is going to be mid teens, but that isn't a guaranteed player, certainly not a certain instant impact. We need D.

  9. There’s no way we can get to 1 2 or 3spot in the draft. We are retooling not rebuilding.

  10. I think Yzerman may look at the East and how crazy good it is (especially the Atlantic Division) and think that the Wings are not near enough to turn the corner. That would explain why he sold high on Hronek and shipped Bertuzzi, delaying their eventual window and getting picks. As of today, the Wings have what should be 5 of the first 50 picks of this year's draft and we already know how good of a draft class it is.

  11. Better not be the next Nate Schmitt or that Horvat trade looking much worse . Lets see how Hronek does partnered with Myers as a test .

  12. Hronek has a strong shot, but not the best aim. His passes tend to be too fast or too slow causing the puck to sail out of reach or into the skates of his teammates. Other than that he's a good player. I's say average with the potential to be above average NHL caliber D.

Now for some retrospect and anecdotal evidence from a Red Wings Fan…
30 years of watching NHL and the Wings build their dynasty in the 90's I can remember trading away good players. For example Ciccarelli and Shepard in summer of 96. This was after: The Red Wings finished first in wins (62), points (131), tied the Washington Capitals for most shutouts (9), allowed the fewest goals (181), the fewest even-strength goals (128), the fewest power-play goals (44) and had the best penalty-kill percentage (88.27%). 131 points is still the record in the history of the NHL. But someone named Scotty Bowman who was the GM and Coach decided to change the focus of the team with the best record in NHL history. We went on to win 4 cups the next 11 years so maybe you do need to break some eggs to make an omelette.

  13. You gotta get great players in to be able to re sign your stars, they don’t want to stay with a loser. They will sign for less to stay. I like this deal. He’s already the best defender. The Canucks still have tons of pics.

  14. I don't want to be a troll but Yzerman is by far the most overrated GM in the NHL. Stop analysing everything he does like he is a god. Seven years without a playoff no GM in the league can have that latitude but his name is Yzerman so it's ok he's just patient…. The Vrana / Mantha deal was a steal. The nejelkovic deal was a steal too. Yeah right !! Yeah he is in a rebuild but think about the SIgning of Copp / Chiarot, the guy wanted to win this year. Sure things, Detroit the way they are going might be good soon or later, but for sure it will not be enough to win a cup. Even if in 2-3 years the teams get better, hey the team will have been in a rebuild for ten years. Think about it. Overrated guy.

  15. I’m a die hard Det fan. I like Hronek a lot but if you think he’s a top pair D man you’re going to be disappointed. His D is frustrating and a lot of his points are from PP time and empty netters.

  16. Yzerman is making trades,to better the wings, but yet you so called analysts criticize him for doing so. He left the Red Wings, went to a losing team of Tampa Bay, won the cup after 2 years, and now after 1.5 years of trying to make the team better. Right away, you media criticize him after just 1.5 years of building. WTF.! I know in my heart Mr. Yzerman knows what he is doing.! All you so called "experts" don't.! If You are All so God Damn Sure that you know better., Than WHY aren't you GMs or Managers.! But you're quick to blame if a trade doesn't work out, or the number whatever doesn't produce.! Try walking in their shoes for just one day.! You won't. Because you can't.! But you're first to complain, " on the behave" of everyone else.! Let the GMs do their job. And then, you do yours, after the trade requirements. Whether a year, or two.!

  17. Wow! Red Wings fleeced the Canucks. The Wings got a lot for a guy they were never going to sign long term.

  18. We have OEL and our big 3 if it's not win now we'll lose Hughes and probably Petey then what? Draft guys and hope they replace a top 10 D man and C, let's not forget what happened with Juolevi and Virtanen. Open your eyes and start seeing the forest for the trees.
