Today we’ll be going over an article on Detroit Hockey Now, highlighting a few things the Red Wings could do in the short-term future.

Will they draft a goaltender in the 1st round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, either Jesper Wallstedt or Sebastian Cossa?

Could they make a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets for Elvis Merzlikins?

  1. Davos!!! First and foremost, I think Bernier will be back rather than any trade taking place. Giving up draft picks isn't part of this section of the Yzerplan. I'm not against drafting Wallstedt at #6 but I think it only happens if who they really want isn't there. That's what makes Cossa at #22 a really viable option – in fact there's the possibility here of making a real difference to the rebuild. The perfect scenario would be either Eklund or McTavish at #6 to get the center prospect we desperately need and then Cossa follows with the bonus pick. Of course this may not happen but Cossa's ranking could open the door for it. That list of goalie prospects is actually longer than I thought but none of them are Sebastian Cossa level so I'm definitely on board with this proposed situation.

  2. With Detroit, SJ, LA and then Chicago…. I can't see a goalie be available for Detroit after their 6th overall pick

  3. Wallstedt will not go top 10.
    Probably still awail at 15-20.
Might go 2nd round. Depend on his performance, in lulea and national team. If he play good he will play 22-23 games in lulea. If he play superb. He will still only get 22-23 regular session games.

  4. If they pass on Eklund or Edvinsson that will not be a great move.
2-3 year development time for Wallstedt to become a starter, yet the real question is where does Yzerman think the Red Wings timeline is on the rebuild? He hinted there was not a goalie worthy for the top 10.

  5. Same thing I said in thehockeywriters in talking about how to address the goalie problem in Detroit:

"This is such a hard one to say what to do with any confidence. I'm fine with Wallstedt at six although I'd rather trade down and pick him if possible. I'm happy with Cossa at 22 instead. I'd be thrilled if you could actually pry Alnefelt from Tampa as part of the expansion or cap problems they have (suggestion from one of the writers). I'm also good with signing Driedger or Ullmark no matter what happens with the rest of that (although I'll hate to see Bernier go). It's going to be a hard nut to crack.

If I'm pressed though, Wallstedt is not my most desirable pick at six unless all that's left at the top are wingers. I'd rather a McTavish, Berniers, Power, Hughes, or Edvinsson, but I'd rather Wallstedt over another winger. Seeing as the board may be all over the place, I'll assume one of the others is available and pick them. Cossa's stock has been rising too much to plan on him being there at 22, and I don't want to trade up for him especially as I'm hoping Raty will be available as a hopeful steal. So, I will assume Cossa is gone. I will be really surprised if Tampa rids themselves of Alnefelt. I know they are set in goal, but I'd still be surprised. Someone else will probably fix their problems for less, or someone from the west will take Alnefelt which means that Tampa won't have to deal with him. So, I guess sign Ullmark (worse defense in front of him) and throw darts in the later rounds in the draft."

  6. At #6 Wallstedt and #23 Raty or Chayka. My reasoning is because the wings will be terrible next year and could most likely end up in a position to get Wright, Lambert or Savoie, so a forward this year isn’t the best idea. Also forgot to mention that Carey Price was taken at #5 and he has carried Montreal since his debut. HC Davos!

  7. If Detroit ends up drafting a goalie one then it will be by moving around a bit in the draft. Trade down from 6th (not likely unless somebody realllllllly wants to make a deal) or up a bit from 23rd (very possible with how may picks Detroit has.) I think Bernier would happy to sign a 2 year deal again with the Wings and it's good both both sides. Nobody can pay him as much as the Wings can and he seems to be happy in Detroit. Don't give up on Petrocelli yet…. he may sign and be the future in the net for the Wings.

  8. I wouldn’t take a goalie at 6. We don’t have good enough defense in front of him yet. He’s get ruined

  9. First, whoever is picked is great and I fully support. That said, the combos i’d like are Edvinsson/Cossa or Wallstedt/Chayka. I wouldn’t mind Eklund or MacTavish as part of either combo either.

  10. Do you really think Jarmo is stupid enough to make that trade? The writer who proposed that trade should be out of a job.

  11. No way will Stevie take Wallstedt at 6..I think its either Eklund if he is there , or a top defensemen..We have pick 22, and 3- 2nd rounders to maneuver with to move up to get Cossa if he desires..I think we can wait another year when we are closer to putting the final touches on the rebuild..Also a slim chance Vancouver or Ottawa could be interested in trading picks 9 or 10 if Wallstedt were still on the board for #22 and 2-2nd rounders..Stevie has alot of flexability a with those High picks in this years draft

  12. Columbus would be crazy to make that trade and as a Detroit fan I’m not too fond of it either. In a crapshoot of a draft the more picks you have the better chance you have of landing a career-long NHLer with those second and third round picks. Merzlikins also doesn’t fit the timeline in Detroit and would require a pricey extension in the midst of the rebuild.

  13. Davos – Wallstedt all day for the Red Wings. A future of G. Wallstedt D. Seider/Hronek F. Larkin/Raymond/Vrana is a serious core to move forward with…

  14. If I'm in Yzerman's position I re sign Bernie and take the best non goalie available with the 6th pick. Then if he's still on the board at 22 take Sebastian Cossa. No CBJ trade, its not worth it.
I want the Wings to be bad enough the next2 years to have a shot at Shane Wright and or Connor Bedard.

  15. Davos! Everyone should check out the Spengler Cup that's played there every year. Sick tournament with awesome teams.

  16. First, Keith Petruzzelli is very unlikely to sign and will become a FA in August. I don't like the trade for Merz and simply because of age and it would tell Yzerman to not draft a goalie. We need a blue chip in net. Personally, I still believe he drafts Wallstedt at 6. He's been quiet on the situation and when asked, he seemed to deflect. Almost as if he doesn't want to bring attention and surprise people at the draft. Just my take.

  17. Davos! I can’t see Columbus trading Elvis to Detroit for a pick unless it’s with one of the other 1sts for #6–and I don’t think that Stevie Y makes that deal.

  18. Goalie coaches have been praising Wallstedt as the best prospect they've ever seen, so I'm pretty high on him, if Yzerman takes him at 6, or trades a couple spots down for him (always a risk) I'll support his decision
