The New York Islanders Are Back in the Series After an Intense 5-1 Win in Game 3

The New York Islanders played an intense, physical hockey game and got four goals late in the third period to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-1 and get back into the series.

We break down the reasons for the win and discuss the fine play of Ilya Sorokin, Kyle Palmieri, Casey Cizikas and many other Isles and explain why the Isles won.

We also discuss the power play which continues to struggle and gave up another shorthanded goal and we discuss the atmosphere at the first ever playoff game at UBS Arena and preview preview Game 4 on Sunday.

All this and more on this special playoff bonus episode of the Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. You could see mid way through the 3rd period the Canes started sagging maybe tired..maybe beat up…and guys were getting shots…Nelson had two, Parise, Fasching, so close…Martin, CZ, Pagaeu…and the D were involved, then the PPG and the Canes basically quit attacking for whatever reason. Hate the Sunday 1pm game, but that's what the NHL wants…this will be a tough game, look for the Canes to really attack and try to get a lead to defend…first goal again will be huge, even though the Isles only had the 1 goal lead for a short time…Rantaa was good but our goalie was better…

  2. WOW let that sink in. Isles score not only a team playoff record but nhl playoff record four fastest goals ever. Something even bossy and the dynasty never did. I'm still trying to grasp how such a sorry offense did that. Isles got back into the series with some serious momentum now. Playoffs can be crazy. That's why you are only as good as your last game and a series can't be judged until each team has equal amount of home games. Still wasn't a perfect game as trainwreck pp gives up a shorty. And someone should tell big lou acquisition engval not to stand around celebrating goals too soon. Could have scored another goal if engal went to the net instead of standing there with arms up as puck rolled across the goal line. Once again great pick-up lou. Dude looks like he is ready to fall over like a tree everytime on the ice. And canes have virtually no offense right now. Now continue to the physical game to canes isles. And canes trend of winning home gamea and losing on the road continues going back to last playoff. Did it thru first 13 last playoff before dropping gm. 7 to rags at home. Now 7 playoff losses in a row on road for canes.

  3. Hi Gil , my son Scotty and I had a great time at the game. The place was going crazy and it was alot of fun. The islanders are the best third period team at home. Hopefully we can continue and tie it up Sunday. I only get playoff tickets every other game. Thanks again Gil for this great show you have.. lets go islanders 😊

  4. Great win!…Honestly thought they were in serious trouble after Cizikas scored in the second, Isles seemed to lose air and focus, Carolina scores short handed and to me they were floundering….But to their credit they bore down (Sorokin) and exploded…..Not going to get a swelled head over one win, Humble up, get some rest and thump them again (great body checking) Sunday afternoon!…Go Islanders!!!

  5. Don’t forget that the Isles set an NHL playoff record for fastest 4 goals 😮 amazing! Broke a long standing record that was set in 1944

  6. Thank you for doing this podcast after Game 3, Gil.

I missed the game last night because of work, so I am thankful you did the podcast to illustrate what happened
in Game 3. Great takes as always. Looking forward to talking to you on Twitter Sunday.

  7. They must of heard me bad mouthing them! This is what we thought was going to happen after the trade deadline! Dare I say, OFFENSE!!!!!!

  8. Great show Gil as always. The team and the fans needed that last night and I’ll bet it let the flood gates open. If anyone is old enough to have seen Rod Play for the flyers, you know he ripped into his team after the game. The isles played like they should’ve, pissed off with nothing too lose. Once again Barzy figure skating (Trotz wrecked him). Someone needs to grab Barzy and Nelson and slap them upside their heads and tell them shoot the damn puck, enough passing it and turning it over. Playoff hockey is the only sport that you can skip the season and see the absolute best of each team and we finally saw it tonight. I think Lame should consider sitting Aho and putting Bolduc back in the lineup, Aho gets pushed around too much. Other than that if they play this way tomorrow and can get a goal or 2 before the 3rd period, the Canes will fold.

  9. Most of that game was very frustrating to watch. The Isles passes and passing choices are horrible for most of the game. They had a few chances for an odd man rush, and the no pressure pass is off by a few feet. They get in the zone and start panic passing to guys who are being smothered with coverage and there is a turnover. Just like most of game 2, and just like in game 2, they start clicking near the end of the game. I wish they could get their game going earlier in the game. It was these flashes of playing like a coordinated team on offense in game 2 that got me thinking they have a chance to take this series, then they play 2 and 1/2 periods like they never played offense as a team before. WTF? I'm not talking about the flubs under pressure. The no pressure, time and space passing is HORRIBLE for most of the game. So frustrating.
Late in the 2nd I couldn't watch anymore and I switched over to the Boston game. The Isles WILL win the series….if they can get their #$% %$#@ heads together right from the start of each game.
