In game 2 between the Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Islanders, we got ANOTHER controversial non call from NHL referees. After islanders defence man Mayfield got high sticked.. the refs missed the call and the hurricanes would score on the ensuing play. We break down the issue of officiating in the NHL.. and why it is becoming a problem.

You said it yourself in your own explanation HE LIFTED THE STICK INTO HIS OWN FACE
not a penalty….
Boy you are a smart cookie….
Even if it was an uncalled penalty, stopping to cry to the ref is not doing his job. Preventing that fucking goal was. I'll ask this again, WHY IS MAYFIELD STILL AN ISLANDER?
Not limited to hockey.
If everyone thinks the officiating is bad now, idk how well you’d have fared in the 90s when you basically had to commit a crime to get a penalty in overtime called.
I know the game has changed but whatever happened to letting em play? I mean, I get it it sucks for the team that loses in this situation and maybe all of this is truly for the good of the game to have 14 penalties a night in the playoffs but idk… it used to be kind of understood that in the playoffs they were going to let a lot more slide and unfortunately that’s led to a lot of salty fans over the years but that’s kind of the nature of the beast and it usually all evens out by the end of a series.
All of that said, it should at least be consistent what they’re gonna allow and what they’re gonna let go. The officiating certainly hasn’t been consistent and that’s definitely a problem, but we probably shouldn’t expect that they’re gonna call the playoffs the same way they did the regular season, either. It is the playoffs after all and there’s gonna be a larger margin of error because it’s always going to feel more fair to let teams decide it 5 on 5 rather than 5 on 4.
Haven't seen anything but bad officiating this playoffs
On the Canes/Isles high stick, I think the Ref was screened by the Linesman at the moment the high stick happens, and the Linesman cannot call that penalty. Still a missed call, but one that only someone with Superman's x-ray vision could have made.
The whinging about McCauley is just that. Those playoff games that McCauley reffed mostly had penalty differentials in favor of the Leafs, and some of the "crucial" calls against them were made by the OTHER ref in the game. The Leafs were 5-0-1 this year in games worked by Wes. Also, the bit about Keefe testifying against his brother…..first, it was his brother-in-law, not his brother. Second, at the time, it was not even his brother-in-law. And third, the record of his testimony is not public, so we cannot know for sure if he testified for or against. We do know that if there was a reasonable cause for concern in the matter, the Leafs would have petitioned the league to have McCauley removed from their games.
The other stuff…yep, missed calls. Happens every game, and every fanabase whines about it. Even me. But it has never been better. Every single year, it is the worst year ever.
As a Canucks fan in 2011 I was told to suck it up cus that's playoff hockey. So yeah. Whatever dude.
Its a disgrace!
Should be tested before game, they cannot be that stupid straight
The officiating in the Stars / Wild series has been atrocious to say the least.
Highlights tripping call in OT… "was the right call BTW". So why are you listing it. Inconsistency? They were different games and different officials. The first instance sure, might of been missed but from certain angles your view gets blocked and they don't have 1000 eyes looking everywhere. The 2 refs you pointed out were behind and don't tell me that players don't often fake a high stick when it gets close to them. They cannot micro analyze each second on slow-mo. People complain every year about officiating, its nothing new. 1st round of playoffs usually is worse as the teams test the boundaries of what is tolerated, then start to get less penalties in the latter series.
Your analysis is pathetic.
The only consistency about the NHL officials is their inconsistency . This is no secret. It's been happening for decades. The only fix is holding officials accountable for their bad calls and I'm not saying fine the refs or suspending them what I'm saying is have it known to all players and coaches of the refs " discrepancies and kinda implement a three strikes rule. Once three strikes is attained they are suspended from reffing any game until a committee has reviewed them and deems them able to go back and ref games or are suspended indefinitely. They could use the player safety committee to review all instances.
Being a Bruins and Avalanche fan, I agree; the Zebras are ruining the Playoffs. AGAIN! I get it's the playoffs, but be consistent in what is a call and what isn't a call-every shift-every game-every night.
They are cheating, all the money they make from gambling. Sports is corrupt, if you ain't corrupt you're a slave
Refs r trash
Nothing new to see here. The playoff officiating has been consistent for the 50 years I've been watching hockey. Video reviews only work if the camera has the exact correct angle — a video camera cannot detect 'feel', such as a puck glancing off a high stick. Nothing can or will be done. It's exactly as you say it is. The team that wins is the team that bests rolls with punches and capitalizes on opportunities gifted to them.
Refs will continue to this bullshit until the refs face consequences for bad calls. They don't care about bad calls because they know nothing will happen to them.
A bad call from an official decided the outcome of the Super Bowl this year. If you guys aren’t American football fans as well, you have not yet begun to be embarrassed
The worst part is late in games they just start ejecting players for checking in the corners. "Trying to KeEp iT fRoM GetTinG oUt oF ConTroL" It looks horrible, playoff hockey is when pure hockey is played. Only undeniable calls would be called, anything that is considered a "judgement" call is not a penalty in the playoffs.
The first video (NYI Vs CAR) is just your utter lack of knowledge about the game. With the play so close to the blueline, the linesman is watching to see if the puck exits the zone, and if he'll need to make an offsides call. The ref, being blocked out by the linesman and the Isles' player, doesn't see it either, as again, he's not focused on that. That was an accidental high stick, whereas the 2nd video, it's a clear attempt at a successful trip. Pretty simple if you knew hockey from playing, and didn't think being a fan meant you knew everything.
Jean-Gabriel Pageau slashed Teravainen and is out with a broken hand(no call)
It's the NHL.
No crying.
I'm so disgusted by what I've seen. All season I've been waiting for the playoffs but I've washed my hands of the NHL. I didn't watch a game tonight. So done with it.
I feel like they are stuck between make the right call and let them play. If the refs made all the calls you know everyone would be just as mad
Dude lifted the opponents stick into his own face and it was a good tripping call. What is the issue?
It’s not random calling at all, it’s all rigged and scripted 😉 always in favour of American teams 😳 everyone should start doing their own research and looking into the decades of scandals and corruption in the NHL. It’s quite shocking. As an Oilers fan, the Oilers need to play with the mindset and realization that everything and everyone is against them. They need to not take any more penalties whatsoever and just let the kings. Keep on doing what they’re doing 😩🙄 maybe then it will start being called fairly
look, I understand that angels and judgement makes a difference in calls… but when the differences are this bad, you need to do something about it
So you got highsticked, your falling down dead lost the game. You want to dive, go play soccer
