[Nick Richard] Luke Schenn leads all Leafs defensemen with a 63.57 xGF% through four playoff games. He leads the entire team with a 84.15 GF% and has only been on for one goal against at 5v5. Not even mentioning his intangibles, leadership, or toughness, but he has been spectacular so far.

  1. Schenn loves this city and has already bought a house.

Calling it now – he will re-sign here for league minimum next season, two year deal.

  2. That top pairing has been the best defensive duo in the series, just like Leafs nation all predicted.

  3. -Ghostface-

I still remember how after the trade deadline, people on this subreddit were like “oh we have too many d-men, schenn has to be the odd one out” 🤦‍♂️ dudes fucking awesome

  4. I_Am_Vladimir_Putin

Schenner and McCabe added a much needed physical element to our D

  5. keith_ac

how many punches to TB’s head does Luke Schenn lead in?

  6. ArthasCousland

Can somebody confirm if this is good?

  7. My favorite moment by him was him standing between the benches when Hagal and compnay were hurling threats to the Leafs bench. He stood there and took all the heat and negative emotion to get the others to focus on the game. Fucking love ya schenny

  8. I’m getting Schenn jersey when we make it to the 2nd round.

  9. Bojarzin

I’ll admit, I was wrong about Schenn. I do still think Liljegren should be playing, but it wouldn’t be to replace Schenn

  10. Jonesdeclectice

Worth noting that per NaturalStatTrick, Justin Holl is last among defencemen with a 42.20 xGF% through four playoff games. He is last on the entire team with a 25.00% GF% and has been on the ice for 6GA and only 2GF at 5v5.

  11. EntryDiligent6908

He’s been amazing under pressure in the Dzone. Exactly what we’ve been missing for years a big body able to take a hit and make a play.

  12. CdnRageBear

I’m so glad he’s home, I fucking missed him. I think we all did

Some takes in this thread have aged poorly:
    https://old.reddit.com/r/leafs/comments/12enuym/luke_schenn_in_11_games_since_being_acquired_by/

    > He hits people, and should play bottom pair minutes. That’s all he is.

    > I 100% get WHY people like him and I like those things about him too but he is not good and will not help you win in any material way.

    > Schenn obviously has his strengths, but I honestly can’t believe they’re going to stick Rielly with another immobile anti-puckmover that tanks his offence this playoff. Lybushkin 2.0

    > I liked the ROR and McCabe trades but I really don’t think the flurry of deals after that made this team any better.

The xGF metrics are helpful, but my big issue with sports analytics is that they don’t quantify uncertainty well. That might be because people don’t know how too, or because they like being ‘guru’s’. If I get some time for hobbies I might make a series of posts about it. Suffice to say, xGF% is a very very noisy metric, and it has a lot of very weird properties. It’s a decent start, but the caveats are rarely discussed.

  14. So next year:

    Rielly + Schenn

    Brodie + McCabe

    Gio + Lilly

    Timmins as 7th

(Holl signs a stupid deal in Edmonton or Vancouver, like 4 mill a year for 5 years)

  15. BeerLeagueSnipes

Love that Hagel was chirping Schenn for being irrelevant and then goes out there, misses a penalty shot and gloats after 2 periods only to get it thrown back in his face.

  16. TheGapInTysonsTeeth

    Re-sign our sweet boy.

The Prodigal Son returns home and helps the Leafs exorcise the demons. It would be fucking poetry.

    Get it done, boys!

  17. ---rocks---

I remember on pension plan puppets, when he got drafted everyone referred to him as “OLAS” (our Luke and saviour). Love that we have him back.

  18. ovondansuchi

Imagine telling someone in 2008 that in 2023, Schenn would be our best defenseman in a playoff series, they would say “Yeah, that makes sense”.

    Funny how that all worked

  19. RandomAndReliable

These are amazing stats, especially compared to Holl being on the ice for nearly all of TBLs goals. u/joemcsam729 probably can understand these stats.

Schenn is a 2x Stanley cup and an absolute beast. He clears the net, block shots, throws hits, drops the mitts, has a calming presence for the team, and allows the stars to play to their full potential without them being “afraid” as Schenn will have their back. He is EXACTLY what this team needed on the backend.

  20. Medium_Well

Seriously considering getting a Schenn jersey. Between him, O’Reilly, Reilly, McCabe and Gio, we have a team of Grade-A certified beauties right now.

  21. howsshegoin

there’s no such thing as “intangibles” and toughness is code for terrifying plays

    I am very smart btw

  22. LunchBoxMercenary

I hope he re-signs this off season because I would like to “re-buy” a Schenn jersey

  23. Rielly – Schenn

    McCabe – Liljegren

    Gio – Brodie

  24. JamesCurtis24

The main thing is just simply playing Schenn to his strengths.

He’s not a 25 minute, #1 guy. If you try him to make him that, you’re gonna have a bad time. This city already tried that once.

When you let him do his thing, you get results.

  25. JoeMackinaw

He also made some seriously good plays with the puck under pressure in his own end last game too. It’s the combination of his grit and skill that makes him so valuable. We’ve tried too many tough guy d men who couldn’t move the puck well. Schenn is the answer to our long search for a shut down d partner for Reilly.

  26. And to think all it cost us to acquire him was a single 3rd rounder.

  27. MutedHornet87

I’m glad to see this. He’s played well and been a really good addition

It’s nice to see Luke back and doing well
