Id say a major boarding. No suspension. 🤷♂️ eitherway should have been called a major if a suspension comes of the play. So I'd say refs on ice messed up. Its an unfortunate hit and play. Don't think Makar was maliciously truing to hurt Mcann either. Hope Mcann gets better soon. Makar does need to be held accountable and so does Mcann… so again id say 4 min major with no suapension. Hard agree with Megan.
I dont have an issue with the suspension in a vacuum. Problem is,the nhl doesnt police this shit evenly. It seems they protect thugs-with far worse histories. The Dumba situation is a perfect comparison. Or look at the other Wild dman-Spurgeon maybe-who lost his mind,& literally tried to break a Blues ankle last playoffs.Or 1st I thought of was Kolesar on Byram-as you mentioned. And you are also right,if Mcann doesnt get hurt-thered be no suspension.
But Avs gotta just move on-they can beat this team w/o Makar for 1 game.Sure its much tougher,& sucks-but Seattle lost 40 goal scorer. Its not even-Makar is better than Mcann. But Mcann also is not likely back this series,so move on-weve dealt with worse. And giving in to their rotten luck or surrendering to the hockey gods isnt the answer. If they lose-its far more understandable-what luck theyve been dealt all season. I mean Dallas has barely had an injury all yr,& as awfyl as the Pavelski deal was-their fans act like its the worst thing in the world. Thatd be just a normal Thursday-or whatever-for the Avs this year.
But this core has dealt with worse before. In the bubble-they lost 6 regulars-including Landy-yet somehow nearly won 3 straight games vs Dallas. They came within OT of advancing-WITH MICHAEL HUTCHINSON in net games 5-7. That was more mission impossible,than this. If Nuke doesnt come back-I no longer think we are getting by the Minny-Dallas winner. But they can beat this team-without their top goal scorer-then see what happens. Id never totally write them off,after the amazing resiliency theyve proven the last few yrs.
But funny thing is,you retorically asked-"dont the Seattle fans know Makar is such a good guy"-or whatever. No bro-many of them barely know who Makar is. Its obvious they are an unsophisticated,neophyte fan base-that barely knows what they are watching. Like Av fans,around 1997 or so. I could 100 percent be sold on a conspiracy against the Avs. It just does seem like the league just doesn't like the Avs
So a penguins brute drives his shoulder into Cales head putting him out for multiple games and nothing was called. Yet Cale lands a hit with unfortunate whiplash and he gets suspended in a playoff game. Make it make sense.
I’ve also seen a disturbing amount of Kraken fans wanting Cale to get bloodied. So maybe him being out is a good thing.

I would LOVE the DoPs to explain why the Dumba hit wasn't suspended, but Makar's was. Absolutely insane. Dumba nearly takes Pavelski's head off and the league is like, "eh, play through gents." What a joke.
I'm firmly in the "let it die" camp and have been since Landy said he wasn't coming back. We don't have the forward depth to compete with the other top teams right now, and to further extend a season that is surely going to end at some point without a Cup just shortens the desperately needed offseason recovery. I hurts to say that, but it's the facts.
Avs have no chance in game 5! With Makar out Seattle will score 5 goals at minimum. Not saying the series is over but Avs are gonna have to win games 6 and 7.

I know what you are saying in comparing the Dumba hit, but I think there is a big difference in that the Dumba hit was on a player that had the puck right before the hit happened (even if its late Pavelski still had the puck right before the hit) whereas here McCann had shot the puck, gone into the corner and then gets hit and injured. I think the Dumba hit was definitively harder, but Makar made the hit after the point at which a whistle should have been blown and not in the flow of a play. Refs should have blown the whistle though and in my mind completely screwed him

How can u suspend Cale Makar? the blatant disrespect to the avs all series. the krakheads have had multiple no calls slashing boarding high sticks to our players face hitting mackinnon our best player right on his wrist with a stick…. All of them No calls. Then the dive in the tripping penalty on Manson. The officiating is garbage. We’re the defending cup champions and we as a fan base have so much pride in our team. The puck was rolling up the boards no whistle and they both collided the puck was near both players. I don’t see how theyre trying to hype up this new team….. the avalanche have been through the pain and the joy. and krappen haven’t done shit or been through shit their “fans” didn’t even watch hockey before this week. Yeahhhh sorry guys, I'm almost always with you but this take is pretty far off IMO. Whistle doesn't matter. He doesn't know where the puck is and therefore he CAN'T just hit a random dude who he thinks might have it. He made a mistake and deserves a game.
DPS is saying the game refs screwed up by making it a minor.
When this playoff round is over, these refs will probably be done for the season.
Follow the $, AJ. The difference between the Dumba and the Makar hit is that the latter involves Seattle. Second year in the league and near the top in revenue generation. They don’t want to lose an emerging fan base where, if Makar had not been suspended, the local story in Seattle would be that dirty plays aren’t policed by the NHL. The league will not risk alienating that fan base and the coin they are spending.
They punished the player because of the team he plays for as much as the hit. F the refs, f the league.
Makar took two different head shots. Nothing.
The real issue here is, if you can't see the puck and someone in front of you is slowing down, are you justified in slamming that person into the boards at full speed when (because the puck is not there) he has no reason to expect the hit? Forget about the whistle; that is a given. I understand the mentality of playing through the whistle, but McCann had clearly stopped skating hard right after he took the shot. He had his back to Makar and got probably a millisecond's worth of a glimpse before getting absolutely pancaked into the boards. It wasn't boarding per se, but McCann still was relatively defenseless.
In light of these circumstances, I think the NHL got it right here, not because I don't like Makar. I paid hundreds of dollars at a charity auction to get a puck autographed by him. He's a phenom and a critical part of my favorite hockey team. The NHL got it right because there was no hockey legitimate reason for this hit and it caused outsized harm. I would not want a precedent to be set in which whether a referee blows a whistle quickly enough factors into whether a player suffers long term or otherwise horrific injury.

My big problem here is consistency. I mostly agree with Meghan. How is this punished but the dumba hit is not? Just be consistent.
And why was the injury taken into consideration here, when it isn’t in a lot of other suspensions or supplemental discipline. I just don’t understand.

Foligno just got a game misconduct. Per NHL logic he should be suspended right? A guy with a history? Not saying his hit tonight was dirty but, where the hell is the consistency?!?! Cale has no history whatsoever!!! Besides maybe ratting on himself to get the refs to call off a penalty.
