The New Jersey Devils have been steadily improving their overall game as the playoffs progress and there are certain players that deserve a lot more credit. Jersey Joe (@headsuphockeypodcast2707) joined me on today’s episode to discuss more of those X-factor players and also his thoughts after the first four games of the playoffs.

Akira Schmid reminds me of Ken Dryden. Almost exact same size. And also cool, calm and collected. And, remember, Dryden was called up at the end of the season, saw only six regular season games, and then led the Canadiens to the first of many titles that year. I think Schmid can do the same for the Devils. On top of all that, Vanacek reminds me of Rogie Vachon. Again, similar size. Vachon was a Hall of Famer but not as good as Dryden. Same thing with Vanacek who is good but not as good as Schmid. Very similar situation. May it have a similar result. Schmid could be a very special player.
Schmid does three things elite
1.He is always in the proper position, his movement is purposefull.
2.His puck skills are great he gets behind the net to snub out a forecheck
3.His ability to see around the defense and offensive players to track pucks a literal ostrich
Timo has 0 points, negative +/-, shitload of penalty minutes…
the idea that your top 6 winger who is looking at 8 mil+ resign doesnt have to produce is ridiculous.
I am not saying we shouldnt resign him, because he IS great, but so far he is underperforming.
The question about Schmid-Vanacek is a question with so many variables in the answer. There's a gray area. If the Devils lose I don't think that's an automatic reason to replace Schmid after how he's looked the last 2 games. Now, if they get blown out badly I think that would be a reason to make the change, even if temporarily
the 3rd period was the way the devils need to play the rest of the series, Schmid is doing amazingly but if we can keep shutting them down near the neutral zone we are set
Schmid has this stone cold look about him this year, nothing seems to faze him. In the right position at all times to allow him to not look so frantic while making save after save. Very impressed with him, and hope we have many years to come.
But dont forget about Daws!
I believe one young Jack Hughes has really elevated his game, which is both surprising and not really a surprise, if that makes any sense.
Despite having no playoff experience prior to last week and his small stature – he's taken some real blows by much larger players like K'Andre Miller and Jacob Trouba – he hasn't backed down, even taking the body more often compared to the regular season. Not to mention he's dangerous every time he touches the puck, especially in odd-man situations.
I guess Sevo has been surprisingly steady as well as has Bahl. Lazar and Bastian, while unspectacular, have been good insofar as they do no harm, unlike say, Miles Wood and Brendan Smith.
The Devils haven't even played their best game yet. Maybe they never will, maybe Game 4 is as good as it'll get, I just hope that the last two games are the start of something special.
Listen, I’m a huge Devils fan and Martin Brodeur is not only my favorite NHL player, but my favorite athlete. With that being said, even though Brodeur has a ton of records for NHL goalies, he wasn’t the best goalie. He was great, and was definitely an elite goaltender, but a lot of his success can be attributed to the strong defense he had in front of him for a good portion of his career. Having a great defensive force in front of the net makes an average goalie look like an all-star. He just so happened to be an all-star to begin with. Again, Brodeur is my favorite athlete and I’m a huge Devils fan, but being realistic I don’t think anyone can deny the fact that his defense is what helped him become the legend that he is. However, being one of the last stand-up goaltenders (more hybrid towards the end), and his amazing stick handling (I’d argue he was the best at that in the NHL), made him a blast to watch play and is the reason why he became my favorite athlete after I first saw him in net in the spring of 92’.
Offense needs to have that coming out party! Gm 5 at the rock needs to be that site! Let's go!
its hard to pick a single person as everyone has started playing well. but if i were to pick one id be schmid
Great Show, but I think we need to change his name to Crazy Joe if he thinks A.Schmid would have Won any of the first two game, not a chance. And let's see how he does tonight…
