Recap of Kraken vs Avalanche Game Five

Well, this series heads back to Seattle and it could be the final game of the series. I don’t think many expected this.

  1. I'd be incredibly surprised at this point if the Avs pull this out. They're getting absolutely nothing from their bottom 6, who aren't even forechecking that well either, so everything falls on the top line to produce. The kraken know this and are doing their best to shut it down and clog lanes. It's impressive to watch, they're swinging a forward to pressure the puck carrier who's ready to break if there's a turnover, and the other 4 are dropping into a lower block and forcing play on the perimeter by clogging shot and passing lanes against the top line.

Once Helm went down in game 2, and nuke had to leave for personal reasons, I knew we were going to have trouble going forward. Manson looks rushed back for the playoffs and might not play game 6 due to reinjury as well, so unless we suddenly start to get depth scoring I don't see us winning tomorrow.

  2. I was predicting 4-0 for Avs, but now I really want Kraken to win and Rantanen & Lehkonen to join Finland in WHC šŸ˜Š…

  3. I think a lot of people thought the Avs would run over the Kraken just like they did Nashville last year. But, the Kraken lost a game in this series after leading by 2 goals in the 3rd period. If they had held that lead, the series would be over. And I do believe the Kraken will win this series.

  4. This isn't a big upset. The Avs inflated schedule down the end, and trying to put all the pieces in at the last moment just isn't working. Nobody ever gave Seattle a chance, which is an absolute insult to how good they actually are. They'll go far these playoffs. My Avs need the rest.

  5. Iā€™m enjoying Kraken hockey. The Kraken, the Oilers, the Stars and TOR/TBL equally are what Iā€™ve been enjoying most. I have not yet seen NYR/NJD though. So maybe thereā€™s exciting hockey there too.

  6. As an Avs fan I'm in agreement with the non-call and Mac should have complained from the bench, not the ice. The boys are frustrated.
I'm also not surprised at how well Seattle is doing. Every fanbase in the NHL was upset about who their team lost to that expansion. They finally got their coaching squared away and it is coming together for them. They're reminding me of the Blues in 2019. Not in the style of play but in the going from bottom of the league to clawing their way to victory.
All that is left to say is that if they beat the Avs, they better win at least a game or two in the conference finals.

  7. Gotta love Mackinnon getting back to his bench late because he was busy complaining about a rightful non call

  8. Just look back to that 7 game road swing by Seattle earlier in the schedule. They went in to Boston and handed them their first home loss of the season. They also ran the table on that trip and did it the same way every game. Ron Francis is easily GM of the year. Well done!

  9. I've been both impressed and stunned by what the Kraken have been doing, according to The Athletic, they were even longer odds than the Panthers of advancing past the first round.

They still have to win another game and who knows what happens after that but a VGK, Stars or Canadiens-type surprise run to the SCF isn't out of the realm of possibility.

  10. Really disappointed in you, Hockey Guy.

It was absolutely a trip. Mack doesnā€™t go down at all if not for that.

Iā€™ve never once heard the excuse ā€œwell the other guy went down/was going down too.ā€

What kind of justification is that?

It wasnā€™t an egregious motion, but an action resulting in a trip must be called. Especially when they called that weak interference penalty when the Kraken player stuck out their knee to initiate contact with 37.

  11. Assuming both teams commit infractions at exactly the same rate is a major stupid take. May as well not call penalties at all then if they all are supposed to even out.

ā€œJust let them playā€ doesnā€™t work when they arenā€™t even handed in their officiating.

Especially when one team is a clean and fast team vs a greasy grinding team. Nobody should deny these are the styles and the penalty minutes through the year show that. Different styles that are more physical results in more calls, and finesse teams less.

No itā€™s not the worst officiated series ever. But the calls Seattle has gotten breaks on and the calls Colorado has gotten bad breaks on have been more than enough to change the entire complexion of this series.

  12. I personally would've liked to see them put Shane Wright in the lineup in the absence of Jared McCann. I don't think it would've been a bad idea to give him some NHL primetime and see how he fits into the high-pressure playoff atmosphere. However, the Kartye decision is strong and overall worked out, so I can't really criticize.
