Lafleur smoked, Bossy smoked… many, many players did – from the 80s back to the beginnings of the NHL.

I smoke cigarettes and I run marathons. It’s not good for me, and I’m sure it’ll catch up eventually, but there ya go. I had asthma as a kid, and still nothing coming back. I’m not proud of it, I wish I could quit, just saying that the effects are different with different athletes.

I had a few friends who were Army Rangers and also Marines and they smoked heavily. Grew up playing and one of the best players I’d ever seen, ended up in the AHL I think, smoked heavily. Idk. Some people can just handle it. Also, I doubt their conditioning and levels of athleticism was as much of a focus as it is today. Just a different era where they knew relatively nothing about anything.

When I was in the Army I used to smoke before any time based runs. The vasoconstricting effect of the nicotine helped with my performance.

Newsflash, lots of athletes still smoke

They were certainly wilder in that time. Now when players are on the bench, they watch an Ipad and drink koolaid.

In junior we used to light up darts in the dressing room washroom between periods. This was like 7 years ago

Never seemed to bother Sergei Zubov either.

My friend’s great uncle played for the Habs in the 60s-70s and from what I heard, they also chugged beers in-between periods! 😂

There’s still players that smoke nowadays as well.

Different time. Even Lemieux was smoking. If I recall correctly also was fond of junk food.

There are players that still smoke cigs between periods. Michael Russo did a poll with the athletic

  14. I feel like smoking really only affects people who don’t stress their lungs ever and then try to do something physical.

  15. Years of bag skating increased their lung capacity. I’m sure it affected their stamina but they were still elite.

A regular Joe, pack a day smoker on the other hand will feel breathless going up a flight of stairs.

Marloro ? Is this the wish version (native imitation)of Marlboro

Have you watched any hockey games from that era recently…they didn’t have stamina. Slow.

As a 40 y/o smoker of 25 years who still plays(beer league), I’ll weigh in. You do notice it but it’s your legs that go first on a shift if you’re doing honest 45 second shifts. If you have more than two lines or more, smoking doesn’t affect you that much but if you’re super short, you’ll hate life by the 3rd period.

Usually hack up a lung halfway through the first period to clear out the lung-butter then you’re good to go.

Having said all that, don’t smoke. It’s a delicious crutch that will kill you and is damn hard to quit.

There’s nothing that quenches your lung thirst like hackin’ a dart after a long game.

The league was COMPLETELY different than it is nowadays. Most players in the 80s and before prolly wouldn’t even make today’s NHL rosters.

The game and sports in general have evolved into something that you literally have to train from a very young to be a pro. It’s almost a lifelong process these days.

    Two different worlds.

When you are young ,smoking causes intracellular hypoxemia and stimulates the body to increase production of hemoglobin. The increase actually increases oxygen carrying capacity as long as lung function remains normal. The old videos of the Tour De France everyone was smoking cigars for a competitive advantage, blood doping before blood doling was a thing.
