They don’t seem to be rebuilding as they aren’t adding as many picks and prospects as a rebuilding team might. Are they seeing themselves as a potential playoff team in 2024?

Plan is going nowhere.
It's tricky.
The team has no problem scoring goals. They're 9th/10th. Defensively, they're terrible, but with defensive upgrades and an improved defensive game collectively, perhaps not all is lost. Hughes said he's not interested in a rebuild so if you truly go this route, you lose the best defensemen the Canucks have had when his contract is up, and probably Petey too. These guys have management by the balls.
Define rebuild? We can all agree it wouldn't include trading a first rounder for Hronek. This franchise has one of the worst prospect pools in the league; show me a franchise that has won the Cup without drafting well and developing their own talent. The Canucks can barely do either of these things; just look at Virtanen and Juolevi choke jobs, and now Podz and Hogs are on the hot seat. Even if we did a rebuild, I'm not convinced the franchise could do it properly.
But if they aren't rebuilding, what the hell are they doing? They hire Ruthersford to build a championship team because you don't hire him for a rebuild. They trade Schenn, try to trade Miller after signing him to a monster contract, try to trade Boeser and Garland, they've acquired Hronek who will be on the downward trajectory of his career unless this squad turns it around tomorrow. They let Bo go (for reasons). Generally, when you trade these players you trade them to a playoff team and typically you don't get roster players back but instead picks and prospects. The TSN panel ripped the club for not having any apparent clue as to what they're doing and it's completely true.
Really, this is more of that 'retooling' bullshit that has seen this franchise with one series victory since 2010/2011. It's not working and never will. But as long as asses are in the seats, Francesco will never care and he'll keep trying it, and keep bending management to his will.
John 3-6
For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.
In my opinion the Canucks are 3-5 years away from and 8th seed if they have great drafting years and most of those guys will it been be NHL ready still.
Let me try and put it a different way is the idea of the retool the same yes is how’s it being done different yes. Aatu Raty 20, Beauvillier 25, Hronek 25, Studnicka 24, kravtsov 23, bloom 19, Bear 25. They are adding players that fit in a lot of the same timeline
Yeah there hasn’t been a plan in Van City for over a decade.
Unfortunately, they are not rebuilding, but retooling for the playoffs for the next two years. What Canucks don't seem to understand is that this team, 27th in the NHL, will not make the playoffs next year or the year after with this roster. You also cannot compete for the cup with OEL and Miller as literal anchors to you cap. This team will most likely be ready to finally rebuild in 2029-30 when these contracts will finally be off the books. What a sad state of affairs.
You talk about teams like Buffalo, Ottawa, Arizona. Those teams have missed the playoffs for years. I understand the Canucks are in a tough spot but years of accruing picks guarantees nothing. Look at the Rangers. Their rebuild was basically done through trades and signings:
As a fellow life-long Canucks fan, It's incredibly pathetic how the Aquilinis have operated this franchise over the past 12 years. Since their single moderately successful year as owners of this team in 2011 they have consistently deteriorated the performance, reputation, and fan base year after year with almost no positive growth in any conceivable area. It's actually somewhat impressive how comically terribly this team has been operating, you'd think they would have just stumbled into a good signing or two over the period. But the absolute lack of self awareness by ownership that they are not very smart hockey people and should allow those who are to operate their team indicates nothing but perpetual stagnation in mediocrity for the Canucks until there is a change in ownership. They are caught in a cycle of letting key assets go for too little or nothing and then being forced to overpay for other team's expendable assets due to a lack of proper draft capital management and player development. The meddling by ownership also ensures that Vancouver is a repulsive destination for prospective GMs who might actually be able to fix the issue if they value their reputation or chances of continuing to be an NHL GM.. I honestly have no idea what the "plan" in Vancouver currently is. But I'm certain it's not to build a Stanley Cup winning team any time soon, never mind a perennial challenger like Pittsburgh or Tampa have built. If it wasn't for the massive demand for tickets and merch in Vancouver despite the mediocrity then I'd say they're going to regret this. But the reality of it is that it would have to get so much worse in Vancouver, hard to even imagine what that would be like that but it's true, before they start to even worry about running at a loss in Vancouver and that is enough for them to maintain ownership. The Aquilinis have made it irrefutably clear that as long as they keep making money they do not give the tiniest fraction of a fuck about whether or not Vancouver ever wins a cup.
Do you think if Elias says "no thanks" that Columbus might try and trade for him? And if so, do you think that will push them to a playoff position (barring any injuries)
Canucks are kind of in the same spot they’ve been since 2015
I heard, and I wish I could remember where, but they are over with only 16 players signed.
Canucks fans now are very patient with rebuilds. 99% of us wants a full rebuild. But Aquaman doesn't want to. He loves 1st around exits just so he can earn some quick bucks.
Let's not forget that Petersen and Hughes were holdouts for their most recent contracts. And pretty much negotiated in tandem. What happens if they continue to work in tandem. And demand that they both be traded to a contending team? Who could blame them? There is nothing to suggest that Rutherford even has a plan.
Canucks trading for players that will help them win games down the stretch but still not make the playoffs because why not?
Even if the Canucks manage to get Connor Bedard, based on Vancouver's history of BAD decisions i bet they'll just trade him away within 6 months for a new backup goalie & a 10th round pick.
Plan? PLAN!? We're gonna be lucky to win a game!
Look at Chicago, they have a gold mine of 1st and 2nd round picks. That’s what Vancouver should be doing, but apparently their GM has other plans.
As a Pens fan, the timing for a Miller trade was not right. Miller needed to be added to the Pens roster, not at the expense of one of its components. The other aspect is that it has to be Millers choice. He just signed the extension so he needs to want to play in Pittsburgh. His contract is misplaced on the Canucks. Pens still have their first this year. Even Demko might be better for the Pens. Jarry might be a good signing for the Canucks.
This whole video is predicated on Tocchet saying that they are in a rebuild. They aren't in a rebuild. Everything points towards them building around Pettersson, Hughes and Demko and that is what Rutherford has told us.
They're not going to build around Pettersson because they already did that and won a couple rounds of lockdown playoffs. That's it.
The long term plan is likely to win meaningless games for decades to come, be a bubble team forever, annoying the fans who will continue attending games regardless.
Let’s not forget that all contenders also have an extremely good backup goalie good example of that is Boston this year ullmark/swayman tandem has been elite and is a big part of why they are winning games Canucks really need to strip it to the bare bones and start from the ground up around petey and Hughes
The canucks need to rebuild, not do whatever this is. Yikes.
When you don't know what you're doing, it's somewhat impossible to have a "plan".
They are a different team with demko playing well, you saw it last night versus the leafs. Tochet is also making them much tougher to play against. I wouldn’t throw the towel in yet. Management has a totally mess to clean up. It’s not time to blow up the team and rebuild right now
the canucks are doomed for a while…that OEL contract is sooooo bad. AZ fleeced them in that trade
I hope we take Matvei in the draft.
8:08… 'yep, playoffs!'…lol!
NJ DEvils Homegrown Drafts 6th Round J Bratt …NJ did have about 3 1st rd picks in last few yrs…w Luke Hughes still coming…I think they could make some noise
Wish they hired you
Go back to the early/mid 90s uniform.
Garland @ 5 mil is a complete joke…horrific!!!
The dumbest organization with the worst owner
I am pretty sure they don't have a plan. They want to compete. They added Hronek who I don't mind, but they are built on other teams misses. Is Hronek going to be another?
Yeah the OEL deal was so bad. They had reached the end of those other contracts. Just had to wait one more year and instead took on OEL forever. Conor Garland isn't as good as they claimed and or thought.
Mikheyev was an insane pickup for a team that needed a defenseman.
Oh Yeah Dylan Guenther and no OEL or Conor Garland. Wow.
Demko better be good. Otherwise that's one more guy you have to replace and he becomes your Calvin Petersen the man paid to be the goalie of the future who isn't.
Raty might be a blue-chipper?
Canucks need to draft more. Their good players were and are the guys they drafted.
The Canucks are so far off. They have four or five players I like and a bundle of holes.
Shannon is bang on about draft picks. Regardless of whether your scouts are able to identify them, there ARE quality NHL'er's available to you at any pick within the top 50. This is why it's so frustrating as a fan when the organization devalues these picks, particularly the second rounders which they've been throwing away for years now.
Ok, we made a bad move of NOT extending Pety for 8yrs. Trading for OEL was a move Benning made to save his job, and NOT pulling that trade off was NOT an option because of the Acquilini's. If Benning didn't pull a big trade, he probably would have been fired same summer. We actually got a good deal on Hronek because he's consistently put up solid numbers and he's young. Solid right-shot dmen definitely weren't gonna come cheap, when it comes time to extend him, he'll take some of Myer's money that's freed up. Hronek is NOT Hughes' d partner, he's there to solidify our top-4. Maybe we run that tandem on the powerplay…?
The stockpiling of the draft picks is a rebuild move, but you gotta convince the Acquilinis…Lol
The consensus from around the league is that Allvin overpaid Yzerman. Then his response to criticism was “ I’m not collecting draft picks for the sake of collecting draft picks”. Should have been fired for that comment IMO.
The plan is to get Quinn so frustrated that he forces his way to jersey
People that dont see the value in draft picks are missing the point, the players are cost controlled for the first years if they hit. Anytime you sign a player thats +25 you pay for what they have done or are so you "never" have players being better thatn the contract
You should do Sami Salo or Jyrki Lumme career video!
The plan is so simple… The plan is, there is no plan.
glad you mentioned tampa. GREAT drafts
The plan isn't hard to see Shannon, you just might not like it. Management hasn't shown any qualms with acquireing future assets the way Benning was, but this is not a rebuild, and a non-rebuild plan is not doomed to fail. Sure, the outlook is still a bit murky, but like Benning said, and I know we like to make fun of him for it, but we just don't have all the information yet
JJ Moser a top 4 defender? I dunno
Major surgery doesn't equate to a rebuild
The plan is to finish 13-15 every year and over pay useless veterans until Aquilini's family forces the clown to sell the team to someone with a brain. Petersson will be gone pretty quick and Hughes will follow.
I think the plan is something that a very famous coach came up with. Can you guess?Because I know. Its my secret.
