The NHL DoPS is absolutely pathetic

The NHL Department of Player Safety is a joke and in these NHL playoffs, they once again prove that they don’t really are about player safety. This is evident after not even having a hearing with Seattle Kraken forward Jordan Eberle. We saw the late interference hit Colorados Cale Makar laid on Jared McCann in game 4 of this series that led to a 1 game suspension. We also saw Torontos Michael Bunting get 3 games for a high hit on Lightning defensemen Cernak. So when we saw a bad boarding hit on Andrew Cogliano in game 6, I thought for sure it would result in a 1 game suspension or at least a hearing and a fine. But we got nothing! After that news broke, news came from the Avalanche that Cogliano suffered a fractured neck from the hit and will be missing the remainder of this series. This lack of consistency is pathetic. I cover this in todays NHL hockey video!

  1. As an Avalanche fan, I've been FURIOUS with the officiating in this series. A missed tripping call in game 5 on the Kraken that allowed Seattle to score a 2-1 go ahead goal which turned out to be the game winner in a 3-2 game, which in turn gave Seattle a 3-2 series lead is just one example. THIS. THIS RIGHT HERE, is one of the blood boiling rage inducing things that reminds me the NHL DoPS is a JOKE. EVERYONE IN THE DOPS NEEDS TO BE FIRED INTO THE SUN! START IT ALL OVER AND BE CONSISTENT WITH YOUR CALLS!

Oh, and the officials of this Avalanche VS Kraken series also needs to be fired into the sun as well.

  2. it's a scary and dangerous hit. But at this level of hockey, why is he standing there so long with his head down, facing the boards from 2 feet away? I don't expect a player to be like "Oh I guess we have to wait for him to move"

  3. I would like to see COL win game 7, and then punish Eberle themselves when SEA returns to Ball Arena next season.

  4. He didn’t even hit the numbers pause it at 1:04 his numbers are fully visible the whole time. He hit him under his arm. Mcann has been out for the whole series for a hit that was much more dirty

  5. Spot on rant. Good stuff. They NEED to establish some sort of consistency for safety sake if nothing else.

  6. The fine price to pay NEEDS to be increased. Having players making millions of $$$$$ a year and yet a 5k max fine is a joke.

  7. As a loyal kraken fan Ebs definitely deserved a 5 Minute and/or game during games 6. He also deserves at LEAST a hearing and possibly a suspension. I also want answers from Colorado (and yes I am aware they probably didn’t know the extent of the injury) allowing ur injury play who just got turned into a accordion play where he could have been injured even more.

  8. This is an egregious lack of action on the part of the NHL. I am a PT with 32 years experience who gasped out loud when I saw this hit, knowing it was likely Cogliano was severed injured with head/neck and possible spinal cord damage. If the NHL is really serious about protecting the players they need to revisit this lack of a decision ASAP, or lose all credibility.

  9. Yep, you’ve said it.

Is Eberle a dirty player? Nope.

That doesn’t matter. Was he in full control of his body prior to the hit from behind. Meaning was he tripped or hit into Cogliano? No.

So he consciously hit Cogliano from behind.

Sorry but that is 1 game minimum. I would argue possibly 2 given the results.

Do they actually want to get that hit out of the game?

If they actually did maybe they set an example.

  10. i believe like all sports because people love to throw this word around are rigged and that they didnt want Colorado back in stanley again

  11. Gary Bittman and his croonies already picked the winner just like a beauty contest. Sports are no longer athletic events but entertainment

  12. Back turned, head down, completely defenseless, no attempt to play the puck, that is a garbage play that needs to disappear from hockey. DoPS should have to explain why this isn't a suspension.

  13. Rule 603 | Boarding

(Note) Boarding is the action where a player pushes, trips or body checks an opponent causing them to go dangerously into the boards. This includes: Accelerating through the check to a player who is in a vulnerable or defenseless position and driving an opponent excessively into the boards with no focus on or intent to play the puck, or any check delivered for the purpose of punishment or intimidation that causes the opponent to go unnecessarily and excessively into the boards.

The onus is on the player delivering the check to avoid placing a vulnerable or defenseless opponent in danger.

    (a) A minor plus a misconduct or major plus game misconduct penalty shall be assessed for boarding an opponent.

“Rolling” an opponent along the boards where he is attempting to go through too small an opening is not considered boarding.

    (b) A major plus game misconduct penalty shall be assessed to any player who recklessly endangers an opponent as a result of boarding.

    (c) A match penalty for reckless endangerment may also be assessed for boarding.

Looks like to me he checked all the boxes for a minor, major and match. According to the rule and my experience as a Ref.
I think it time to unleash MacDermid, if I were the Avs. Refs want this type of game, let them have it then. Only Oleksiak can go toe to toe with him, probably will still lose. Bring out the beast. Let him take run at Eberle see if he likes it, taste of his own medicine. Refs clearly don't have control of the game or any series this playoffs and players are getting hurt over it. So its clear the players have to do the policing on the ice, since the Refs are NOT being held accountable of their poor performances. Wish I could get paid 6 digits and have a failing grade as a Ref.

  14. This is a one game suspension, easy. They don't even need to sugar coat it, "Makar boarded the guy for an injury, one game. Eberle boarded the guy for an injury, one game. Now it's settled, clean it up and play hockey."

I don't think he was trying to break his neck, but I do think he was intentionally boarding him. I mean he's lining up from halfway across the ice.
