In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the future of Evgeny Kuznetsov in Washington. Kuzy scored his most goals (27) in the 2017-2018 season. He saw a bit of a dip in production in the years that followed and then he saw an increase in production when he scored 24 goals in the 2021-2022 season. Kuzy was drafted in the first round 26th overall in the 2010 draft. He’s been a hot and cold player for the Caps.
In Evgeny Kuznetsov, Washington has chosen a Russian forward in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft for the fourth time (Alexandre Volchkov, Alexander Semin, Alex Ovechkin). Kuznetsov’s primary position is listed as center by the league’s Central registry, so this marks the third straight draft in which Washington has chosen a center with its first choice in the draft (Anton Gustafsson, Marcus Johansson).
The controversy this year is that Kuzy told Russian media that he wants to be traded out of DC. He has denied those report. His future in DC is uncertain and he will be a UFA after the 2025/2025 season.

You’re purely speculation. Kuzy never went to media and said he wanted out. It was Russian media who came out and said this. We all know how honest Russia and their media is 🙄. Be better Dan
He just needs a coach that doesn’t make him miserable they need to work something out with him to make him as happy as possible to stay in DC when he’s on he’s one of the hottest players in the league this year was a nightmare
It’s seems like you and that guy from Stars and Sticks are always saying let’s get younger and free up cap space by trading Backy, Oshie and Kuzy. Moving their contracts isn’t something you can do without retaining salary and or sending a draft picks to make those deals possible. And without many young players in the system it’s not that they have any ready replacements. Team is stuck in the middle and it does seem they just aren’t ready to tank and rebuild which frankly very teams are.
